After much thought, it seems to me that the LSU administration simply made two straight home run picks in hiring football coaches. As we long-suffering LSU fans who have lived through the post-Cholly Mac era can attest, making a great coaching hire is not easy.

What are the odds that the next hire will be another great one? Think about the level of recruiting that the Saban/Miles combo has done since 2001. Sure, we had a nice class every once in a while before that, but the consistent Top 10 classes are far beyond anything LSU had ever done prior to that. Think about the bowl performances of this team, especially since Miles got here. LSU was miserable in bowls before the Saban/Miles tandem went a torrid 8-3 over the last 11 seasons, with 4 of those wins coming in BCS bowls and most coming over ranked and highly ranked teams.

I worry that if Miles does depart, this will not continue. There is the contingent of LSU fans that believe that LSU is greater than these coaches, and they may be right.

But, all I can look at is prior performance and sorry to say, LSU had sporadic success at best for all of our history prior to this era. It has been the last 11 seasons that have put LSU in elite company and has us mentioned with the Texases, Alabamas, Floridas, Ohio States and Oklahomas. I want to believe that another coach (the RIGHT hire, whoever that might be) will continue that. I just find it hard to believe that a third straight home run will be hit. Let's get the big bat out for this one.

Top 5 recruiting class every year means my mom can coach and win at least 6 games a year.

And two of the bowls (both Cap1) were easily winnable as one of them was lost on a fluke play.

Grow a pair. For $4-$5 million a year, LSU can hire a quality coach. It's not like there are only 3 on the fricking planet.

Joe Dean treated the football program like a lemonade stand. Those days are over.

Or maybe we shut the entire football program down and have a defeatist attitude. The positigers are showing their true colors. Instead of supporting a new coach they are showing all they ever were are Miles supporters.

It's OK. The worse the light I'm cast in here, the better in the world of people with brains.

there is a HUGE difference now. millions of difference. our administration would not pay for top talent during the time frame you speak of. there was no TAF to supplement salaries. i remember the day when there was an unwritten rule we couldn't pay the coach more than the governor. they made extra money for their radio and tv shows, etc but we went on the cheap every damn hire. hell, chollie mac was a 34 yr old that didn't require much money at all when he was hired. we have learned our lesson and now pay for top talent.

I'm not being defeatist. I'm just saying throwing $4 million at a coach does not make him go 62-17. He has to go out and do it. Yes, and please spare me the "Yeah, but he COULD have gone 67-12 if he had just thrown the ball."

werent a top flight program at that time in CFB, big difference when you can lure a kid with championship aspirations.

That's why you hire a quality coach and pay him the money.

Again, LSU was not in the position in the 90s as it is now due to Joe Dean. We had shitty facilities, we hired coaches on the cheap in a penny penching organization that doesn't exist now.

I don't think that's very hard to see as truth.

If we get a new coach, I support the new coach!

I'm tired of all these Anti New Coach people pining for the days of Miles! Miles ain't coming back people !

I agree with this, but there is no guarantee that spending a bunch of money on a coach translates into a winning team. There are plenty of examples to the contrary.

Of course there isn't.

There's no guarantee that if Miles had stayed that he wins 10+ a season 4 of the next 6 years.

That's why you do your homework in a search. Les is less risky without a doubt, but it's not like he got fired. He moved on.
