Sources tell @247Sports that Derek Mason will soon be named #Vanderbilt head coach. No details on when it will be announced at this time.

Sources confirm to me within the last hour Chad Morris is not going to Vanderbilt. Expect him to return to Clemson to call ball plays in '14

They just announced on 104.5 here. That is a good hire for Vandy.

Geeked. Still proof and pudding.

Wow, Chad Morris has to be one of the worst interviewers ever.
He has got to be around 0-7 on head coaching positions now.

Total upgrade for Vandy, IMO. I've thought the world of Mason since he took over seamlessly for Harbaugh.

I would have liked to have seen what Morris could do there, but I think this is a better hire for Vandy. The guy already has experience with a school that has high academic requirements.
Also, depending on how strong his connections to the west coast are (and if they stay strong), he could open a new part of the country for Vandy recruiting.

If he follows the Harbaugh model, there is no recruiting territory. Harbaugh stopped recruiting exclusively local and started recruiting nationally to find guys with high academic potential and who places value on a Stanford degree. I assume Mason will follow this model and recruit all over.
There are plenty of smart recruits out there. Most don't go to the higher end academic schools because they want the exposure of a top notch football school. Stanford has proven you can have both. Vandy's recent success and a guy like Mason selling that may prove the same.

I hope so. I'd love to see Franklin's name wiped out of the record books. He'll forever be thanked for starting the build, but that way we used him just like he used us, without the underhanded dealings.

I just don't get the animosity of Vanderbilt fans. He had Vanderbilt where they've arguably never been.

There's no argument. He took them to three straight bowl games and won nine games back to back for the first time ever.

With the change in the rookie contracts and top talent leaving early (after 3) I think Vandy has a chance to be much more competitive in the SEC

I could see that happening if the transition is smooth. The SEC east won't be down forever. And James Franklin wasn't exactly beating winning programs. That being said, what he did was amazing.

I was looking at it from a winning aspect, not necessarily bowls. Vanderbilt was right there with Alabama and Tennessee entering the 1960s. Then poof, their administration went in another direction.
