Cutcliffe is a damn good coach. He just can't recruit to save his life.

I don't know if he is all that great of a coach, but he damn sure can't recruit. He had Eli Manning and couldn't pull a team around him. Not that I think Eli was that great, but he definitely garnered tons of media attention. Cutcliffe couldn't do anything. Tennessee would be stupid to take him in my opinion.

The old Vol Guard feels pretty strong that David Cutcliffe has earned the job. He got screwed at Ole Miss and should be given the chance. If they hire him I wonder if they would make a run at Chavis?

Recruiting is the only way to revive that program. And it's also one of the toughest places to recruit with the lack of in state talent. Cutcliffe would be a great coordinator there, but in no way is the long term solution for head coach.

So how many of these guys are currently starting in the NFL?? 3? 4?
UT will be fine under Cutcliffe, but I don't think he is quite the statement hire they are trying to make right now. He's more of a fall back option.

Cutcliffe had future Butkus Award winner and All-Pro, Willis, spend his entire sophomore season riding the pine so the upperclassmen who'd "put their time in" could start.
An Ole Miss friend tells me that Eli's senior year he audibled 70% of the plays coming from the "offensive genius" Cutcliffe's sideline.

Cutcliffe would work short term IMO. Circle the wagons this year and next then bring in a younger coach

And of that list I think only Eli was a big time recruit.
LIke I said, he's a hell of a coach at getting what he can out of what he's got and developing players, but he's not gonna beat doors down to get top flight recruits to Tennessee.
Also, I'd be willing to bet most of those guys were Mississippi boys/Ole Miss legacy types that were gonna go there regardless.

Disagree with the great for the rest of the SEC part. A mediocre Tennessee team isn't good for any of the teams in the West other than Bama.

Cutcliffe would be a great hire. He needs to get some cracker jack recruiters though. He falls way short in that category. I think the job he did at Ole Miss was better than most give him credit for.
What impressed me so much about the offenses under Cutcliffe was their simplicity. He did not add all the crazy formations or gadget plays but they were damn effective.
I was glad when Ole Miss replaced him with Yaw Yaw.
