Looking at his year by year records, he was trending the right direction for the first 5 years, then flatlined. Wonder why he couldn’t build on those solid year 4 and 5 seasons.

He was DC of some pretty damn good defenses at A&M and ND, and other programs were pursuing him.
IIRC, ND fans didn't want him since he had never been a head coach before, but his hire wasn't all that baffling at the time.
