I know it won't happen, but I think universities should put contracts in place that are more bonus advantageous and they could scale it for a rebuild program. Example: Year one with a lower base salary and get bowl eligible and a large bonus. Nest year same salary but win 7 games, etc. This could lead to keeping coaches longer to build a program.

Agents are too good. These coaches also know they are getting hired to get fired. And when they catch all the hell from fans, they know they are walking away with a big check. That is what makes it worth it.

$1m per win. $3m guaranteed pay, to be deducted from the annual contract total should the annual earnings be more than $3m.

Go undefeated and win the national championship? $15m that year.

Go 9-3 and lose your bowl game? $9m that year.

5 year contract with $15m buyout.

Absolutely! Another huge problem is renegotiating or extension after a huge accomplishment where a bonus should satisfy. It should never be allowed to give a huge jump in guaranteed salary or years added to a huge buyout.

Unfortunately until the bubble bursts or a big school changes, these buyouts and guarantees will continue.

When LSU gave Saban the $1 million dollar contract everything changed.
It gave rise to Jimmy Sexton as the super agent and AD's didn't have a chance after that.

Coaches gonna be pressuring their AD to schedule FCS teams OoC instead of P5 opponents

This is basically similar to how Coach Prime's contract is structured.

It's bonus heavy but there are small raises year by year.

The number of really good coaches is very low. They have all the negotiating power. It's like NFL QBs.

I have no issue with the salaries. Hell, pay them $20 million a year. It's the buyouts that I have an issue with. The contracts are extremely one-sided, with very little incentive (usually) to keep the coach in place.

Great idea except for the fact there will always be some moron AD (and boosters) that will overpay a coach he's in love with to win a bidding war. Whether the war is real or not.

"Oh, they're offering you $5 million with $4 mil in bonuses? Here's $10 million guaranteed to come to my school."

Zach Arnett has a buyout.

The idea that Orgeron had a $17 mil buyout is insane.

He earned a big raise, but there was no need for the buyout. He wasn’t going anywhere
