Truth about Kragthorpe

I've heard several people on here claiming how he has a proven track record as an OC, so I did some statistical digging. The due is, as many have claimed, overrated and another Crowton.
Here are his stats while OC at A&M including their 1998 Big XII title year (his worst by far there):
ypg/ppg (National Ranking)
1998:
Passing - 159.3 (87)
Rushing - 152.7 (54)
Total - 312 (91)
Scoring - 24.7 (55)
1999:
Passing - 228.5 (43)
Rushing - 145.6 (60)
Total - 374.1 (58)
Scoring - 28.9 (39)
2000:
Passing - 235.3 (35)
Rushing - 143.36 (59)
Total - 381.64 (49)
Scoring - 27.91 (46)
Average:
Passing - 207.7 (55)
Rushing - 147.22 (57.7)
Total - 355.9 (66)
Scoring - 27.7 (46.7)
Doesn't look that impressive to me. He was okay at A&M, but nothing special.
Averages the past 3 years under Crowton:
Passing - 179.5 (91.7)
Rushing - 155.77 (54.7)
Total - 335.1 (86)
Scoring - 28.17 (52.3)
So LSU has rushed better and scored more under Crowton the past three seasons than A&M did for 3 years under Kragthorpe. Looks mighty impressive to me.

I'm not sure how that proves anything.

I see a trend there that is the exact opposite of crowton's tenures.

So Kragthorpe's offenses neve ranked in the 100's or 90's. That's a step in the right direction over Crowton.
Seriously though, I think Kragthorpe would be okay, but not a hire that would be at the top of my list. I'll reserve judgment until another OC is actually hired, as belowpar did say there are two other canidates Miles is contemplating. There could be more that he doesn't know about as well. Time will tell.

It proves that at the BCS level he was an average coach, and ironically that A&M did the best (won the big XII) when his offense was utterly putrid. It was horrible that year, and its kind of tough to compare mid 80s to mid 90s rankings when there are at least 5-10 more FBS teams now.
He's never done that great and is a middle of the pack OC. His real claim to fame are those high flying Tulsa offenses. I mean, it's Tulsa. They play in conference USA.

average offensive stats with below average offensive talent.
better than putrid offensive stats with phenomenal talent.
i'd consider him near the same caliber hire as chavis was.. a safe hire, good positional coach, etc.

so you're saying Kragthorpe's offenses got progressively better?
Posted on 1/5/11 at 8:46 pm to bmy
A&M didn't have average offensive talent in the 90's. Their fall came in the early 2000's for goodness sake.

Yes, yet the team's records got progressively worse:
11-3
8-4
7-5
I wonder why that is?
Funniest thing is he could just be an anomaly like Chavis. After 2001, Chavis' best defenses at UT came when the team had a losing record.

Crowton redux.
Belowpar needs to message back up the chain.

Just remember that his upward trend in offense correlated with worse team success.
They won the Big XII title in 1998 in spite of his shitty offense.

If LSU had the 66th ranked total offense this year, there's a real good chance we'd be playing on Monday night. Just sayin'.

Anyone want to comment on him developing or not Qb's?
Posted on 1/5/11 at 9:54 pm to Jaydeaux
I think his a bit overrated as a developer of QBs.
He walked into a upperclassmen in Brohm at UL that was NFL read and a senior and his offense did well.
Once Brohm left it got progressively worse.
He is then credited with coaching Drew Bledsoe for his first year in Buffalo. Mind you, Bledsoe was in his 10th year and had already been both to a Super Bowl and been to 3 pro-bowls. He wasn't traded because he sucked, but because Tom Brady had emerged, was cheaper and younger, and the new face of the franchise.
That said, Kragthorpe magically made him a pro-bowler again to some idiots.
I have yet to see any where that Kragthorpe has proven to be some top notch QB developer.
He was soo good that he turned JR Matt Hasselbeck into a QB with 50% completion, less than 2,000 yards passing, 9 TDs and 9 INTS.
At A&M in 1997, his QBs threw for 12 TDs and just over 2000 yards.
His starting QB in 1998 (his first as OC) threw for 51%, 1025 yards, 6 TDS, and 3 INTs.
Followed up by a slightly better SR year with: 52%, 2374 yards, 14 TDs and 10 INTs. This was a 2009 JJ'esque season.
In his last season at A&M, 58%, 2300 yards, 9 TDs, 10 INTs.
Great QB developer my arse.

Then let's hope it doesn't happen. Although, I think that any OC that can work the system to the players would be a step up. Also, in harmony with the HC

I don't think Brohm is NFL ready today.

Brohm was ready for the NFL in 2007. He never should've stayed another season. Krags screwed him up big time.
I also updated some interesting stats about Krag's QB's in my previous post.
