Would not surprise me if this was the typical Sexton milk Bama for more money play.
He just extended earlier this year, if that didnt happen then yeah I would say it is more than likely just a money grab

I would argue a lot of us in the state also don't know as much as we should. I've tried to learn more through the years. Its really an amazing thing that the legislature setup and I'm sure they had no idea how much it would be worth some day.

On the field results/program history? Nonsense, the facts and figures show that Alabama's history sh### on Texas' program history. Texas is high on the all time wins lists but in all other on the field categories they fall short of Alabama.
IMHO - Bama is top 3 all time (I would put OU and probably USC up there too). Texas is in the 5-10 range. With the wins I could make a case for Texas being 5 after ND at 4. But there are arguments for other schools too (Michigan, LSU, Tennessee)

I don't think many on here realize just how much money several UT Alums have accumulated due to the shale oil boom. One or two alums could pay the $100 million ten year contract and not even lose any sleep. Its unfreakinbelivable what kind of wealth has been generated over there in just the last 5 years.

This is very, very true - not limited to Texas alum of course. It's not just the actual revenue generated due to the sale of the oil/gas - it's the whole industry that has exploded to support the production.

The PUF is really more of a security blanket than anything. It is a huge pile of money but it is very restricted and in the case of Texas a lot of the money (which is only interest) they get from it is being used at the System schools currently (UTD, UTA, UTSA, etc.) and not going to Austin. Most of it has to be spent on infrastructure for instance and Texas isn't needing a ton of new buildings on the Austin campus.
Not a penny of the PUF can be spent on anything resembling athletics in any way.
Texas does have a ton of money for athletics though because they have 450k alumni and a lot of them are very wealthy. They also benefit tremendously as the "NFL team of Austin" with many of the companies in the Austin area buying suites and other investments into the program because they are the only show in town (unless you want to count the Round Rock Express). With a metro of $1.25 million that is generally affluent that's a huge advantage.
Ironically A&M likely has more "oil money" than Texas because we have far more of our school that specializes in the oil industry. A&M is the best Petroleum Engineering school in the world but we have research programs such as the Oil and Drilling Program that have generated billions in research dollars. A&M has grads like the recently deceased George Mitchell that is essentially the "Father of Fracking". The key is if you want to work in the oil business in Texas then A&M is the best school to go to, period.
Not that Texas doesn't have oil money (certainly it does) but that isn't their base of power nearly as much as A&M. The State has a $1.4 Trillion economy though so it's not like oil is the only way to make money.

I was always under the impression that Texas already got just about whomever they wanted in-state, so Saban recruiting wouldn't be that huge a difference. So I'm wrong I guess? I never thought talent was the problem at Tex.

Very accurate take on the whole thing.

last couple of years with Sumlin have been pretty even.
But anyone who thinks Texas with Saban wouldn't get their pick of the litter is just dumb.
They will clean up. It will be ridiculous. Every top Texas talent would go to Texas and they would frolic gingerly to an 11 win season in year 2 and a playoff birth. (10 wins year 1)
The team is stacked with talent already and incredible facilities.
Not sure why people think this is even close to a "rebuilding" job.

You are basically right. They usually get whoever they want, losing out on some of those battles.
The problem as of late has been that they and the recruiting services have been wrong about some players (Garrett Gilbert, Case McCoy, JFF, RG3 etc.) or they just have not developed them.

All of what you said could be true, but most men ca still be persuaded if the price is right and the other side is persistent enough.

Texas has always done well in recruiting but outside of a few years they haven't had truly "pick of the litter". A lot of kids grow up wanting to play at Texas but a lot absolutely do not as well. The question is where those kids go. Realize that OU has quite a few more NC's than Texas and they have done it with Texas talent for instance. A&M has also had periods like now when they have dominated Texas in recruiting.
The bigger shift though is A&M in the SEC, it has changed everything and the fact it corresponds with A&M being far richer and more powerful than ever only makes that emphasized. You simply can't compare a recruiting battle of today to one of 5 years ago when Texas and A&M played the same schedule in the same conference and Texas had new shiny facilities and double the money of A&M.
Anyone that has seen the facilities at Texas vs the facilities at A&M (or Bama or LSU for that matter) would say Texas is trailing currently. They are still very nice but aren't as over the top as the new facilities those schools have built. The financial advantage Texas has is also slipping away fast and will only get worse as the SEC Network money kicks in (Texas already is getting their full LHN share and new B12 Contract share). Kyle will be much nicer than DKR but more importantly the atmosphere to a recruit just isn't even a comparison. There are church gatherings that are louder than DKR on many Saturdays regardless of the attendance.
Saban would absolutely be a huge move for Texas but in the end Texas is still at a fundamental disadvantage in the BDF and that isn't changing.

I agree with this. Bama/Oklahoma/USC to me are the clear top 3 programs in some arbitrary order depending on how you want to frame it. Then the next tier is the other blue bloods... Notre Dame/Michigan/OSU/tu/Nebraska in some other arbitrary order. Then comes your LSUs/UTs/FSUs/Miamis/UFs etc. I find few people are satisfied without an absolute definitive list, and I understand the urge to have one, it just doesn't exist, imo.

First off, natural gas and oil companies are one in the same, and oil and natural gas aren't generally separated with too much distinction when it comes to you're essentially going to drill what's profitable. The natural gas market has been flat for 5 years, and has been barely profitable if at in that time, where as a barrel of oil is expensive as frick. Most O&G companies that leveraged too much in natural gas fields instead of oil/wet gas have only just now come back. Lots of companies that were more in to natural gas lost their arse in the Haynesville and other fields.

People could argue for days on this - I see you included Miami in the third tier. The U always seems to be a polarizing team when it comes to "all time" greats. Does its incredible run in the 80s-90s trump a non-history before it? Would it be in the second tier? hard to say for sure.

Agreed. It's a fascinating subject, and one that takes a lot of context and time to really appreciate.

Does Baylor really have the most political clout in Texas? Surprising to me.
Posted on 12/11/13 at 12:53 pm to phaz
Baylor is probably the most powerful of the private schools but is no higher than 4th overall as I pointed out earlier. They had some power with Bullock as Lt Gov and Richards as Gov when the SWC broke up and they have some very good and loud lawyers but they don't run jack in Austin nowadays. They didn't run jack in the past either, they were just powerful enough not to get completely anal raped by A&M and Texas. They damn near got thrown into the oblivion in conference realignment a couple years ago and the reasons they didn't had to do with A&M and Texas and not them.
