I wasn't totally against Kelly, just was wanting somebody that could create a dynasty for 15 yrs similar to what we've seen Saban do, which meant a younger coach. Somebody with either a great offensive mind or a lock down defense type. I get none of that with Kelly.
But after sleeping on it and giving it some thought
-he is a defensive guy
-he had maybe 2 really down years at ND, which happens at times, and is more apt to happen when recruiting is such a challenge.
-he won the games he should've and his losses were to really good teams. He beat LSU twice.
-his record to top 10 teams is bad....but he never had the talent of Clemson, Bama, LSU, OSU. The admission standards for ND are crazy and this impacts your recruiting. You can't pull the best from the talent pool with those admission standards. This is a constant struggle for ND
-if he can recruit at ND I think he will be fine at LSU.

He will have talent he hasn't had before everywhere on the field. Sure he will be in a tough conference but he will have the talent to match, unlike when he was at ND. The other aspect of Kelly I like is that he could've easily retired from ND in 10 yrs being a ND treasure, even though never winning a national championship.
But he chose the challenge of battling in the toughest conference and facing the GOAT of college football coaches every year in his quest for a title. He walked away from one of the most storied programs to fight in the toughest conference. That says a lot about his desire and fire to win a title.

The folks against this hire are absolutely insane.

Give the man 2 seasons... that's all I ask. IF we suck, I'll some ask for forgiveness.

Once Riley was off the table there wasn't a guy who offered this except Aranda, and Woodward irrationally hates Aranda for some reason.

He has the highest floor of basically any attainable coach in the country. That alone should give him a chance to win it all every few years.

Saban was 57 when he joined Alabama. O is 60.

I’m not getting the age problem on here.

I kinda get his point. If you’re willing to spend 15 mil on a coach then why would you go after somebody in year two of being a HC.

Well the question is if you want a stop gap or a potential long term hire. We went for a stop gap and that's cool. I was responding to the poster's desire for a long term hire. There really weren't that many options once Riley's intentions were known.

Is it possible to be still skeptical of a guy with a 12-9 career head coaching record while playing with almost none of his own recruits without being labeled a “hater”?

I get it. Everyone wants to see their school recreate what Saban has done at Alabama, but do you know how rare that is? Even if you did hire a younger coach like Riley, there is no guarantee he can deliver that. I think most fans whipped themselves up into a frenzy for this exact reason and were going to be let down regardless of who we ended up with. Even it was Riley, they would have been disappointed when he didn't when 4-5 national championships in 10 years because that's what they had convinced themselves was going to happen.

Brian Kelly isn't a sexy hire by any means, but he will be the best football coach we've had as a head coach since Saban. Think about that....It's been 17 years since we've had a coach of this caliber running the show. Kelly has had sustained success everywhere he's been and I don't see why LSU will be any different. The guy can coach and he can hire people that can coach because he's respected, unlike Miles and Orgeron. If those two can win NC's at LSU, then I think Brian Kelly will be just fine.

Well no one ever posts the positive of his age which is he has been a head coach for decades. The guy has forgotten more than most of these young dudes know. I still think Joe Brady had so much success here in 2019 because he had E to lean on all year. That’s why I thought he should have stayed and learned more from him before bolting.

many are very irrational and emotional.

here are the facts

1) kelly was the best college coach available, his resume was similar to riley and riley went to USC. his resume was better than fickell and even matt rhule a NFLer. doubtful dabo was available. he is happy in taterland. like saban in bama. all that is unrealistic wishcasting. kelly was a huge pull.

2) the only coach who he did not have a better resume than was CUM and we were not hiring him and we knew it from the get go. plus how do we know he wanted to leave jaguars? we do not! did his agent reach out? no! if interested i am sure he woulda reached out. our admin was not hiring him anyway and we knew it like with freeze and briles.

it is a red herring. kelly will coach here at least 5 or 6 years maybe 8 to 10. he will win hardware.

If we would have studied the resumes....Kelly would have been a glaring option....SW did his job.

This is a very solid hire. Not the longevity hire that I advocated for behind the scene. This is a very satisfactory hire in my opinion. It was an underwhelming hire when I was first told. After further reflection, the facts on his resume are solid and he has been successful every place he has been.

We were pulled and sunk by one whale but while on the Nantucket Sleigh Ride, Woodward harpooned and reeled in another whale from a different pod!

Can everyone just stop with the talk about Kelly wanting the challenge of playing in the SEC, against the best…That has absolutely nothing to do with why Kelly is going to be the LSU coach…He said a week ago that the only way he could see himself leaving ND was if the fairy godmother came with a $200 million check. Woodward is the fairy godmother.
Yes…LSU got a well qualified coach…But it took LSU paying a guy almost 4x what he was currently making to get him to leave. I highly doubt Kelly was leaving ND if LSU were simply willing to double his salary…So just stop with the Kelly wanted a challenge and that’s why he is leaving ND…That’s not the case at all. I think it’s a good hire and LSU now has a solid coach.
