True story…Minnesota’s Glen Mason was a media/fan favorite for the LSU job when Saban got it. As was OregonSt’s Dennis Erickson.

I have a classmate/booster friend who sat in on a telephone interview with Glen Mason during that search and said he was one of the strangest human beings he had ever talked to.

Yeah, Mason was in consideration for about an afternoon. There was nobody that was getting Dean or members of the BOS excited. Saban initially did not have anyone excited even though Gil Brandt who Dean hired had suggested him from the outset.

Yep.
All of these people who have been saying Saban was a "big name" when LSU hired him in '99 either weren't old enough to be aware of the search then, or are just using revisionist history to try to make themselves sound smarter. The OVERWHELMING majority of LSU fans had the same reaction when Saban was hired. It was "Wait. Who is that? Wasn't he the coach for Michigan St. when we kicked their arse a few years back?"
There was not a ton of initial excitement when Saban was hired at LSU. He was incredibly boring in his introductory press conference and people were STUNNED LSU was making him the 3rd highest paid HC in the nation.
Just thinking about it, I would say the last time LSU fans were collectively excited about a new HC hire with when Curley Hallman was hired.

Miles: "Les Miles? Really? That is the best we could do 2 years removed from winning a NC?
Orgeron: "Holy shite! We missed out on Tom Herman just to hire Coach O?!!
While all but Saban were eventually fired, those 4 produced a lot of wins and three NCs. All, in hindsight, were probably the right hire at the right time. The only one the fans really liked was far any away the worst of the bunch
