Dan Mullen got fired for being an obtuse a-hole who was more interested in getting blown by his drinking buddies than addressing the absolute Chernobyl-level disaster on defense. Additionally, he didn't give a damn about recruiting at the level that is required even at Florida.

Dan Mullen was given a Ferrari and he insisted on putting regular unleaded in it and occasionally a little diesel and seemed mystified as to why it broke down and completely unconcerned when it broke down.

At Florida you are not allowed to lose to Kentucky, Missouri and South Carolina and act like it's no different than losing to Bama or LSU.

Furthermore, there is inside information that Dan had a Come At Me Bro attitude with Stricklin when told to make needed changes.

I will tell you this, Scott Stricklin lost lifelong friends at MSU when he hired Mullen and Dan repaid him with nothing but dick-waving middle fingers while getting done in his own yard with no lube by Samford.

This was inevitable.

I mean he went to 3 straight NY6 bowls with Florida… he brought them back to national contender status. They should have given him more time to get a QB in there.

You don't have to look any further than recruiting. He didn't raise his game up to the level required at UF. He's one that wanted to think it was about his schemes, but it's always about the talent on the field first and foremost.

DMs recruiting is the primary reason he’s gone. That and his loyalty to his friends who couldn’t recruit either put the nail in the coffin.

He ran off one of our best recruiters for his buddy Knox
He turned TRob away to not hurt TGs feelings

I mean he did more with less at Mississippi State. His teams always played tough, he developed his qb’s.

he was a good coordinator but thats it, never should have been a HC and the results speak for themself

He had his QB. Emory Jones was his guy. He made that very obvious by shoehorning him into games, like the 2019 LSU game when Trask was eating us up. Or the 2020 game when Trask was eating us up.

That Emory Jones sucks doesn't make him any less of Mullen's "guy".

Yes, it surprised me.

I didn't think he would win a national title at Florida, but I thought he would be relatively successful--at least as good as McIlwain.

In fact, I am on record on the SECR saying they would finish this year 8-4 even after seeing them get blown out by Georgia.

There is absolutely no excuse for Florida losing to this year's South Carolina and Mizzou teams or for them to allow SAMFORD to set a record for most points scored on the Gators in any first half (That includes a Nebraska team that embarrassed them in the 1995 national title Fiesta Bowl, BTW.) Instead of getting a pretty good bowl, they will literally play Florida State with only the winner getting a bowl at all.

There were a lot of reasons to think that the Tigers would quit this year after O was fired, but it didn't happen.

The Gators totally quit.

I just remember that gif of him like dancing to piped in music bopping his QB in the stomach

So awkward

I talked about Mullen to my florida buddies years before he was hired, they all said he was terrible recruiter and openly hatred by most of the high school coach’s would be a disaster and would never ever be hired by Florida.

Surprised it came to this.

UF is a great opportunity. Seemed Dan just took a ho-hum approach to it.

Not surprised.

Really good OC. Really good with QBs.

Average recruiter.

So…his ceiling is:
Major college OC
Lower tier College head coach
Or…NFL OC/Head Coach. -this is where he should poke around. Just not a dude that recruits like major college coaches do. Was never going to work at UF if it stayed that way.

Strangely…he is probably the coach Jacksonville thought Urban was when they hired him.

It is a different atmosphere to coach a team full of 4-5 star recruits than what he had at MSU.

Orgeron and Miles let the NFLSU crap get into the heads of every kid. It was the demise of both of them.

Only a few guys can manage the balance between elite talent and program consistency. That is why I hope we get Riley. He seems to know how to handle it. Guys like Mullen do not.

This is a conversation about college and college coaches though.

Mullen is better suited for NFL I think. He doesn't have the personality to coach NCAA. He's an arse and doesn't like to recruit. A guy who can't relate with kids these days is doomsday coaching waiting to happen. You see how it fell to pieces for him almost immediately after the LSU loss last year. He lost the team and never recovered it. Same happened to O. That's why a young personable coach or just a guy who can relate is very important in NCAA. You have to respect the guy calling the shots.
