Just another example of a complete failure by a G5 to P5 with only 1 stop HC experience beforehand.

Maybe, but they’re 5-3 this year with a backup QB.

Texas Tech reportedly firing Matt Wells...They are 5-3 and play #4 Oklahoma this week...Clearly administration cares deeply for players? Also, Wells should rest well knowing the last coach who wasn't good enough at Tech is now HC of NFL's only unbeaten

I think it's an example of it being a shitty job. Kliff Kingsbury failed there and he's killing it in the NFL.

Tough job? Sure. I wouldn't call it shitty though. Spike Dykes and Leach consistently fielded bowl teams. Kliff would probably still be there if his teams didn't lay turds in winnable games that cost them bowl bids.

I think Sonny is their guy. The timing is right, the fans would love it, and he could at least get them back to Leach's level.

Traylor is definitely the best option

Dude would recruit better than any Tech coach ever has

spike's record shows you what success at ttu looks like lots of .500ish seasons with a few 9-3 years. which makes what leach did more impressive

That's debatable. Leach was great, but under him, Tech would hang 70 on FCS or directional schools to bolster their overall record before their Big XII schedule got underway.

Spike would take on anybody out of conference, especially during the SWC days. Off the top of my head, they traveled to Florida State, Ohio State, UGA, and Nebraska. I went to a home game against Miami in 1990 when they were peak "U". Those schedules kind of skewed Spike's overall record, and what he accomplished.

Ehh... I'm not anti Leach like some here but go look at Tech's typical OOC under the Pirate. It looks pretty much like what Merlin did when he was at Miss St.

Lincoln was just using LSU for leverage to force their hand so he can go back to his Alma Mater.

Another guy that had never won a G5 conference title, but was handed the keys to a P5 program.

It’s Dykes

Going to be hard to pull him away for multiple reasons.

1. He and his wife LOVE living in University Park (who wouldn't?) and their kids are in elementary and middle school right now. Park Cities schools are far better than anything in Lubbock.

2. Of all the P5s that could come calling Tech is a school that SMU is likely willing to match salaries with. Tech is going to have to break out massive checkbooks to steal him away and that's never really been their MO.

3. They forced out his father and shite canned his mentor. Sure he was born in Lubbock and went to school there but... they haven't exactly treated people he's close to w/the utmost respect.

4. Zero patience. Tech is firing a guy midway through his 3rd year when they are 5-3. There is currently zero chill at a school that really has no right to have zero chill. This kind of firing screams booster meddling. Does Sonny really want to deal with warring booster factions?

5. Have been to Lubbock? It rains mud.

This situation is a little more than just impatience with Wells. The boosters are more pissed with the AD than anything.

From everything I've read, it was similar to an Alleva "I am the search" moment, where there wasn't an actual search. The AD focused on one guy, and hired him. This after giving Kliff a long leash, even though Kliff admitted he didn't care about recruiting. Not that boosters should be telling him how to do his job, but ignoring them all together isn't smart either.

Sonny would be the type of hire to get the boosters back on board, and possibly save the AD's job.

UTT is the ugliest campus in North America and Lubbock is where shitholes go to die.

We’ll see, but I feel pretty confident if he gets the offer he’ll have a very difficult time passing it up.

So you say consistently fielding bowl teams is good for Tech, yet they just fired a coach currently at 5-3

Seems like a fricking terrible place to coach

Wells hasn't made a bowl game yet, and they are likely going to finish 5-7 now after losing to K-State, whether they kept him or not. So your post doesn't make much sense.

My posts makes plenty sense

You say expectations at tech should be to make bowl games, yet they are firing a coach currently 5-3 who is only in his 3rd year with one of them being a covid year. Seems like that is a nightmare spot to be a coach
