Sucks for Ole Miss. They already had to deal with racial issues now both of their Mississippi rival schools may have black head coaches.

From the story...

quote:

Television station WIS in Columbia, S.C., reported today that Nix had been offered the job, citing an unnamed source.

Looks like TD isn't the only venue slobbering after Mr. or Mrs. Unnamed Source.

I think it would be a mistake for them. The only way to build a mid major program fast is by implementing a spread offense.

Defense may win championships a big conferences, but fans and media like gimmick offenses. Ultimately, those are the money makers. They'll get beat by big schools with more talent with this style offense, but they'll put more fans in the seats.

Look for Steve Campbell - HC at Gulf Coast Comm College to probably get OC job under Nix.

Negative. Now being reported in Hattiesburg that this is false.

Per the Hattiesburg American, Nix has only interviewed for the job. There is a list of potentials at the end of this article

I do wonder how Nix would feel about taking over his mentor's program after Bower's unceremoniuous departure.

Meh, probably not bad enough to decline the opportunity to take a HC position. Might be a good stepping stone for him.

And if he isn't interested, I'm sure plenty of others would take the opportunity to become a HC at a mid major.

They need to give some consideration to this guy as HC. He's won everywhere he's been as HC. Probably not going to jump from JUCO to D1 HC, but he's a good one.

Here is what a guy posted on my blog. funny:

Agreed. I don’t know what the USM fans are expecting. They are a small school in a small state with a miniscule athletic budget and they have to compete with TWO SEC school for talent. They average less than 20,000 per game if I recall correctly. They play in what is arguably the worst football conference in the country. Yet when you talk to folks around town (I live in Hattiesburg) they act like they want the Golden Eagles to be perennial national contenders or something. Then, of course, you hear these same people say – with a straight face – that USM needs to hire the Oak Grove High School or Pearl River Community College head coach because they’ve been so successful. I kid you not.

you can tell BUTCH that we average more than 20K attendance and if he knew any better then he would know that not any sane golden eagle expects to be national powers, especially the conference that we are in or while we are not in a BCS conference.

we do expect to go and WIN conference championships with occasional liberty bowl wins in a conference that everyone knows is the worst in the country.

and purplehze - you really need to be a little more honest. Jeff Bower has had 17 years to produce. he was not backstabbed. any other program would have kicked him out YEARS ago. for those that understand what USM football is they will tell you they are surprised that he lasted as long as he has. you also must not be informed enough to know that Bower does not equal USM. he did NOT build USM. SOuthern Miss was winning before he came and will continue to win after.

during the 80s we beat more ranked teams in that 8 or 9 year span than we did Jeff Bower in all of his 17 years. we lost 2 CUSA games , TWO from 1996-2000. weve gone from that to losing 3 conference losses just this year, including RICE and only beating a BAD memphis team 1 time in 4 years. are you telling me we shouldnt look for something better?

gimme a break.

you want it in a nutshell? open your eyes, everyone that reads this thread and read this article.
