here is what I speculate happened:

Mike Debord was rehired by Lloyd Carr at Michigan after he went 12-34 at Central Michigan, so he owes him. Plus there was a lot of rumors that the next head coach was going to be pressured to keep some UM coaches and Debord is supposedly one of them. Add to that Carr got his asst coaches an extra year of salary and they really owe him.

So the Carr camp doesnt want Miles, they need to do something to make sure it isnt Miles and the rumors are a tentative agreement is in place with Miles for after the SECCG. I am speculating but it would not surprise me if the following happened:

1) Debord or someone else intensely loyal to Carr contacts Howard and says not only is Miles coming but he will be on his 2008 staff. This confirms what Howard knows from the UM Coaching search committee. Keep in ind that the AD at Cincy said that when he was contacted for permission to speak to Brian Kelly, it was Lloyd Carr himself who called on behalf of Michigan. So Carr is obviously on the UM coaching search committee too.

2) Howard tells Herbie what Debord or whomever told him and confirms that the Miles deal is in place. Howard doesnt want to be the person who breaks the story because he is involved with the UM search and he doesnt want to be accused of a conflict of interest from his Michigan associates.

3) So Herbie needs a second confirmation and he calls Debord or whomever it is that spoke to Howard and gets a 2nd confirmation directly from the UM Asst Coach. Because Herbie has a second confirmation from a direct source, he doesnt need to name Desmond Howard as his source to his ESPN Gameday producer and Howard can stay above the fray and not have a conflict of interest between UM and ESPN.

4) Herbie makes his statement Saturday morning, embarrassing Miles in the process, and the Carr camp/LSU has boxed Miles in a corner. So Miles has to choose what direction to go in. he has the three LSU contract offers in hand, he is pissed at UM and the way they are handling him on the biggest day of his coaching life, so he chooses the best LSU contract (the one for before the SECCG), has his press conference and debunks herbie and denies his UM intentions which eliminates him from consideration for the UM job forever. The AntiMiles/Carr camp at UM wins the battle and the tOSU/ESPN golden boy is humiliated.

5) Herbie realizes he has been duped by the Carr camp at UM, calls Miles Saturday night after the SECCG and apologizes and also allegedly named his UM source to Miles. After that, Miles has the emotional PC where he talks about how sad he is he cant be in two places and he will not be going back to Michigan. Miles understands that even though he may want to be at UM, the powers that be dont want him and it hurts him. But the consolation is he a hero to an entire state and he has made himself a rich man through loyalty to LSU.

wild scenario

this whole thing is a smokescreen for what will eventually happen.

Miles pulls the plug on the negotiations/talks bc of the leak, now he can't do shite bc of the MNC game. Though, minor talks will resume with bass/martin for a possible move up north after the game.

all the meanwhile, JACK F'N DEL RIO has made the playoffs and loses his first playoff game.

then BOOM.

hehehe

no, UM and Miles are dead. they are embarrassed about the Miles thing and Miles has made it clear he is staying. He made a special effort to point out his wife and kids at the postgame PC and talk about their input into his decision making and I believe that was from the heart. Plus he is about to be really rich

Even if it's bad information... it's still considered a breach of ethics for a journalist to reveal a source.

I know, journalistic ethics... oxymoron, right?

Not for everybody.

I've worked with people who have done jail time to protect a source.

I wouldn't ever give one up. The day you do that is the day no one trusts you anymore.

Now Herbstreit may not subscribe to the same principle... but it s-h-o-u-l-d be next to impossible to "make" him reveal who his source is.

LSU Blog: Herbstreit should be suspended

BATON ROUGE - I have a question. What is Kirk Herbstreit's job status?

If I had done what he did over the weekend, I would likely not be writing for this company right now.

ESPN's Herbstreit threw the biggest interception of his career last Saturday when he said Les Miles was going to be the next coach at Michigan. He wasn't making a prediction. He reported it.

Almost immediately afterwards, I heard from a well-known sports agent who said the story was not true. Agents talk to one another. Someone from LSU also assured me it was not true and never was true. There was no "dated" aspect to Herbstreit's story. It was never true.

Apparently, Herbstreit went with what one source told him. You can't ever do that unless that one source is someone like Les Miles telling you that Les Miles is going to be the next coach, and even then I would still get another source. Even if your singular source is excellent and proven, as a reporter you have to vet the information with other sources just in case. Because singular sources can lie or stretch to carry out their agenda. This happened when Miami reporters made several mistakes regarding Nick Saban's move from LSU to the Miami Dolphins. A major agent source was putting out bad information for his client's benefit, and Miami reporters went with it.

Herbstreit is a great sports anchor. He knows the game. He's very knowledgeable. He also is such a star that he could probably get just about anyone on the phone. That's where he blew it. He needed to make more calls.

According to LSU officials, Pat Forde, a real reporter at ESPN and one of the best anywhere, was prepared to go with an accurate story Saturday morning that LSU was in fact about to announce that Miles was staying at LSU and would address it in detail after the game. But for some reason the accurate story did not make it onto ESPN, while the wrong one did.

When Miles said at a press conference before the game Saturday that he was indeed staying, Herbstreit tried to scramble. And he made another mistake. He said LSU suddenly threw together a contract offer to Miles after his "report" aired. WRONG. As I wrote Friday in my column that appeared Saturday, Miles was speaking to LSU officials on Thursday and Friday nights and had considered saying at a press conference on Friday that he was staying.

Miles spoke with LSU Board of Supervisors member Charles Weems late Friday night, and at that time Miles reached an agreement on new amendments to his existing contract. According to Weems and some LSU players, Miles was never going to Michigan.

He did not make his decision on Saturday. He just announced it.
Herbstreit needs to admit he was wrong about everything concerning his reporting on Miles. And he needs to be off the air for a week or so. Every time his face has been on camera since, it's embarrassing to what is a great network. If he remains on air, he should at least put one of Corso's mascot masks on, because that's about how much credibility he has now.

ESPN has many great reporters. What it needs to do is let its reporters do the reporting and its anchors only anchor.

excellent piece by Guilbeau and I am certain that Herbie had Desmond Howard and another source but Howard wanted to stay out of it, otherwise Howard would have gone with the story himself.

Again, I'm confused. What exactly did Herbstreit do that was different from Buddy Songy, Jimmy Ott, and Shexnaider (sp) from Channel 9 all of last week, BEFORE Herbstreit's report?

LOL at Guilbeau. WTF is he talking about. He is a terrible sportswriter and he doesnt talk live on a show. Everyone wanted to hear what Kirk knew. It just so happened, LSU heard it and countered. No matter what anyone said, UM did contact either Miles or his agent.

Fire Guilbeau, Dubois, Rabalais, and Brady. The basketball team sucks and so does the advocate. It is the worst paper ever.

first off, I thought you were banned due to "Spurrier done deal."

secondly, I'm not a GG fan, but what he lays out is exactly what has been confirmed by many sources, including O'Keefe and Miles' agent, since Saturday.

And Michigan AD Bill Martin has gone on record as saying he never talked to Miles or his agent until Sunday (Miles agent). Martin contacted Miles again on Monday just to be double-sure that Miles was done with Michigan.
