re: SEC Coordinators who became Head Coaches

Even though he wasn't successful, Keith Burns left as our DC in 1999 for Tulsa. Can't think of anyone else under Nutt. What about Fitz Hill? He left to coach San Jose State, but now is president at Arkansas Baptist College, not Ouachita Baptist University as reported in the recent Bleacher Report article.

Strong was also our DC here before going to UF and now Louisville.

Alabama's WR coach from 2007-2010, Curt Cignetti, took the head coaching job at Indiana University of Pennsylvania last off-season. He went 7-3 in his first year at IUP.

Porter is not an ACTIVE head coach...

Wanted to list only folks who are actively coaching as a head coach... Otherwise you could go Dye to Auburn, Dooley to Georgia and the list would not end...

Obviously it makes sense for smaller schools to take chances on proven coordinators, but why do big names schools take chances like this?

When was the last time a top 20 prestige school hired a coordinator that worked out?

I know this is about coordinators, but just pointing out that Doc Holliday (DBs) and Dan McCarney (DL) both got HC jobs from assistant coaching spots at Florida.

I would call Nebraska my second favorite team. I keep up with them a good bit. Pelini is off to a better start than Tom Osborne. Of course Frank Solich was too. The point is, coaches need more than the 4-5 years than has become customary. Unless it is an obvious failure like Turner Gill at Kansas. That all being said, I think NU is in a far better situation than they were for the last three years of the Solich era, or at any point under Callahan.
