Mississippi State: Sources tell FootballScoop Scott Fountain will join the Mississippi State staff after Georgia’s run is over. Fountain, who served as a special teams analyst at Georgia this season, coordinated Auburn’s special teams most of the last decade. Prior to joining Auburn’s staff, Fountain previously coached at Iowa State, Georgia Southern, Middle Tennessee, UCF and Florida State.

Funny how other programs recognize special teams as a part of the game that can determine wins/losses and we just keep missing Field Goals.

LSU had two of these this year. What's your point?

And LSU will have a full time special teams coach, so again what's your point?

Are you under the impression that ST coordinators teach kickers how to kick? Because they don't. They mainly coordinate the return and coverage game. Very few, if any, have an actual kicking background.

College kickers are expected to know how to kick field goals.

The NCAA just approved a 10th assistant coach, so many schools are using it to hire a full-time special teams coach, which virtually no other school has had in the past.

LSU is expected to promote special teams analyst Greg McMahon to that role. He is the former Saints special teams coach.

Don’t follow LSU football much do you? This has been repeatedly said throughout season since the beginning. Article from Advocate mentions again at the end of it.

The "I'll believe it when I see it" approach tends to work best when listening to Orgeron. This has been proven.

Our special teams were the worst they have been in years and I won't believe it gets any better until Orgeron actually hires someone to fix it. My point has been pretty clear. He can say he's going to do things all he wants. A lot of what he's said has been true and a lot of it has been complete bullshite.

I'll believe him when something actually happens.

Orgeron fired the previous years ST coordinator and replaced him with...no one. Don’t blame the “10th asst coach” issue, blame Orgeron. If special teams were a priority for him he’d have a ST coordinator. This year’s awful showing in special teams falls directly on the CEO’s shoulders.

LSU has never had a full-time special teams coordinator and will have one next year. The job was split, just as it is this year.

And I'm not defending anyone. LSU's special teams sucked. But it wasn't because no one was coaching them

And other schools have not dedicated full time coaches to special teams. Many will when the new coach is added, but virtually all schools have a shared coach (or coaches).

Don't let facts get in your way. BDP was outside linebackers coach who also handled special teams. And he did both relatively poorly, so Orgeron limits his responsibilities when he was named interim coach.

You really think BDP would have been out there teaching kicking technique to Culp and Gonsulin?

Other than kicking (which was atrocious) and Chark's decision making, the special teams were pretty solid I thought. Kick coverage was a little shaky at the beginning of the year, but was very good by the end.

Yes, special teams coordinators do not teach kickers how to kick.

Virtually none of them have a kicking background.

They coordinate the return and coverage game, and blocking schemes on kicks and punts. But not the actual kick.

A college kicker is expected to know how to kick.

A) LSU has had a coach designated as “special teams coordinator” for as long as I can remember. Just because they also coached an offensive or defensive position group doesn’t mean that we didn’t have a ST coordinator.

B) it wasn’t just field goal kicking that suffered. We were dead last in the SEC in kickoff returns, 11th in the SEC in punting, for every good Chark punt return there were three times he cost us yardage.

And just because someone doesn't have that designation today doesn't mean someone isn't coaching them.

The duties are divided up between multiple coaches, which is normal even for teams with a designated coordinator.

Our special teams sucked because our kickers sucked. That's the reality. That can really only be solved by recruiting.

Didn't watch much LSU football before O arrived, huh?

Thomas Mcgaughey was Special teams coordinator from 2011-13. Unit was pretty damn good under him. Also a solid recruiter

I've been watching LSU football, likely before you were born.

Thomas Mcgaughey was not a dedicated special teams coach. He was also a defensive assistant coach.
