Sagarin "Coach Ratings"

I did some research using the Sagarin Ratings to create a "Coach Rating". It looks at the average Sagarin Rating during their tenure & the difference between that rating and the rating for the same # of years prior. For example, Saban had an average rating of 95.91 (2007-2016) & Bama had a rating of 79.04 (1998-2006; {1997 N/A}). Thus, Saban's rating is 95.91 + 16.87 (95-91-79.04) = 112.78. Below is the top 10 with a few surprises.
1) N. Saban - 113
2) D. Shaw - 103
3) T. Herman - 101 (Small sample size)
4) U. Meyer - 98
5) J. Harbaugh - 96
5) H. Freeze - 96
7) D. Mullen - 95 (This surprised me but the gap between his tenure & the previous was rather large)
8) J. Fisher - 94
8) J. Mora Jr - 94 (Another surprise but similar reasoning as Mullen)
10) B. Stoops - 90 (Incomplete since his tenure outdated the data)
10) D. Swinney - 90
10) K. Sumlin - 90
Notables - B. Petrino 89, C. Petersen 89

Where did Les Miles fall in this rating system?
Posted on 9/27/16 at 10:24 am to GeauxldenGuy
He was a 92. One of the weaknesses of this system would be long tenured coaches as they are rated on their entire career.

Mullen is not a surprise to me at all. His record at state and his being the Urban Meyer/Florida offensive coordinator are reasons he would be a strong choice to replace Miles.
If Mullen is the fallback guy, LSU will be in good shape coach-wise

Look at the number directly to the left of , "MISS ST".

I would be worried about Mullen having his numbers inflated because of Dak. We are seeing just how good Dak is. Could be the Curley/Favre trap?

Valid point. Mullen would drop to a 91 if Dak's So-Sr seasons were removed.

Mullen coached Dak, Tebow, Alex Smith, Leak and the guy at Bowling Green (Josh Harris). He also recruited the last great QB at Utah (Brian Johnson) who is now his QB coach.
Mullen took a program who had 1 winning season in the previous 8 years, and went 9-4 in his 2nd year there. In that season Auburn was 14-0, LSU was 11-2, Bama was 10-3 and Arkansas was 10-3.
He took freaking Chris Relf and made him competent enough as a two year starter. Relf was a 2 star with only a Miss St offer. After that he took Tyler Russell and broke Miss St passing records with him. He then took Dak, a guy everybody missed on, and groomed him into yet another NFL starting QB like he did with Alex Smith who is still starting today.
Miss St is in the toughest division in college ball and hasn't had a losing season since his first year. Miss St, the team that was awful for a long time before he got there.
The dude would not only continue our pipeline in Florida (kinda hard to bring them to Miss st), but he also recruits the state of Texas, Fred Ross, who is about to break records for Miss St this year, and Louisiana, Josh Robinson had an incredible year in 2014.
Honestly, he's in my top 5 and I would love what he could do with the talent we have on offense. He does care about defense too.

Don't think we will end up with Mullen, but...
He recruited Dak as a QB (when others saw him as a DB). He also coached Dak for his entire college career. He deserves full credit for Dak. He also deserves credit for 6 straight bowl games at Mississippi State. When has that ever happened? And he did that in a stretch where the SEC West is the toughest it has ever been from top to bottom.

I could live with Mullen, but he'd still have Bama to deal with. Can't see this happening.

Gary Patterson - 92 (minimal data for years prior to tenure)
Art Briles - 90
Jeff Brohm - 79
Larry Fedora - 77
Lane Kiffin - 77
PJ Fleck - 66
Willie Taggart - 61
Note: This is only calculated by previous college HC #s.

Higher than Urban Meyer
Cant believe that clown is still employed as a head coach. What the hell has he done that people love him so much

Mullen play calling is questionable at times. He also makes 4.8 million a year. If we are going to pay 5 million for Mullen I would rather pay 6 million for Fisher or Herman.
