20-15 HC record. Maybe if we get 25 No’s first.
Coach Ratings
Posted by Taylor62085 on 10/27/25 at 1:36 pm
One way I like to look at coach performance is looking at the team ESPN FPI the team had before they got there & during their tenure. If a coach is with a team for 4 years then I take the average of those 4 seasons & look at how good the team was 4 years prior. There are obviously other factors when hiring a coach but I think this is a large piece of it. Below are some of the most interesting results.
Jon Sumrall 5.2 (22-23Troy/24-25Tulane) -0.5 (20-21Troy/22-23Tulane)
Lane Kiffin 11.4 9.1
Eli Drinkwitz 8.2 8.1
Brent Key 4.6 -3.1
Marcus Freeman 20.6 19.1
Rhett Lashlee 9.5 0.6
Matt Campbell 7.4 -4.6
Kenny Dillingham 3.8 5.4
Joey McGuire 9.6 3.9
Shane Beamer 6.7 4.1
PJ Fleck 3.9 -0.5
Jon Sumrall 5.2 (22-23Troy/24-25Tulane) -0.5 (20-21Troy/22-23Tulane)
Lane Kiffin 11.4 9.1
Eli Drinkwitz 8.2 8.1
Brent Key 4.6 -3.1
Marcus Freeman 20.6 19.1
Rhett Lashlee 9.5 0.6
Matt Campbell 7.4 -4.6
Kenny Dillingham 3.8 5.4
Joey McGuire 9.6 3.9
Shane Beamer 6.7 4.1
PJ Fleck 3.9 -0.5
Potential OC Shortlist
Posted by Taylor62085 on 11/6/18 at 10:32 am
Looked at the ESPN FPI Offense rating compared to what it was prior to their tenure. The rating is a combination of the average rating & the trend. For comparison, Aranda is 77.1 & Ensminger is 64.2 if using '16 & '18.
Matt Lubick - Washington (Co-OC) - Rating#74 - Has O ties back to Ole Miss. Co-OC makes it difficult to determine how much success he is responsible for as well as having Peterson as a HC.
Mike Yurcich - Oklahoma St. OC - 70.2 - Same issue as Lubick. Is he just riding the mullets coattails?
Hugh Freeze - former Ole Miss HC - 70.1 - Compliance/SEC/NCAA is the issue
Phil Longo - Ole Miss OC - 69.5 -
Lane Kiffin - FAU HC - 69.3 - Not sure he is interested
Billy Napier - ULL HC - 68.9 - Only one season in as HC so unlikely to move.
Jim Chaney - Georgia OC - 68.8 - Has O ties but is in a good situation & is older. Money would have to be big.
Eliah Drinkwitz - NC State OC - 68.3 - Young guy that looks to be up & coming. Doesn't seem like a move O would make though without ties.

This game was when it started to feel like we were getting neutered by Bama each year.
New OC & O Staff Prerequisite
Posted by Taylor62085 on 11/5/18 at 11:01 am
Assuming SE retires or is demoted for next season, our options seem to be limited to guys O has been on staff with in the past. Most popular of those is Kiffin/Freeze obviously. If neither of those are possible then what about Matt Lubick? No idea if they have a good or bad relationship since that was in O's Ole Miss days but he seems to be the most impressive after Kiffin/Freeze. Below are the rest of the notables I saw.
Clay Helton (assuming he is let go)
Tee Martin
Noel Mazzone
John Morton
Dan Werner
Frank Wilson
Curtis Johnson

re: Ensminger v. Canada

How many deep balls did we miss this year? Especially at the beginning of the year. Seemed like it was dialed up at the right time but something would always go wrong.
SE Offense
Posted by Taylor62085 on 1/12/18 at 4:06 pm
Watch the LSU/Louisville game. I think SE's offense will look a lot like that unless LN beats out Brennan. Hodgepodge offense as I like to call it. Having an I-back in for most of a series then running an 11 package the next series. Plus, the defense was lit that game.

re: So if Brian Daboll gets hired into the NFL again, who do you think Saban gets on the phone
Posted by Taylor62085 on 1/11/18 at 3:22 pm to LSU316
Canada seems like the last person Saban would want to hire. Canada would want to put in his own system & Saban wouldn't be having that. He changed his philosophy to a one back power spread out of necessity. I wouldn't expect anymore bold changes in the near future.

5 Stages of LSU Grief
Posted by Taylor62085 on 1/11/18 at 10:05 am
Denial - If they were going to hire Ensminger they would have done it already. They are just kicking the tires on people & waiting for coaches still in CFP/NFL playoffs.
Anger - Ensminger is too old, hasn't been a true OC in 20 years, & O promised the best coaching staff in America.
Bargaining - Maybe they are putting SE's name out there to buy some time to talk to other guys. Maybe SE will be Co-OC with a younger up & coming name.
Depression - We will go 7-5 & won't score any points on top flight defenses. Selling my season tickets.
Acceptance - We did improve some when SE took over the playcalling duties. Maybe we will be bad enough for O to be fired. Aranda '19.

$8.5M (O buyout). I am right there with you. Ready for the Aranda era.
re: Carolina Panthers fired OC and QB coach; About to lose DC

I'd sign up for Shula at this point. Pretty average NFL OC.
re: Ensminger will be a success
Posted by Taylor62085 on 1/8/18 at 8:46 pm to warau
SE will run an offense that doesn’t put the D in bad positions. Aranda is excited for that reason. If they brought in some up tempo guy it naturally causes more point/yards allowed. Doesn’t mean it is a good hire.

This was great. Have an upvote.
re: Fire Miles. Replace him with his DL coach. Make his TE coach OC.

Not only that. We paid a guy $3.2M total to run the offense for one year and go away.

Chaney/Orgeron @ Tennessee
Posted by Taylor62085 on 1/6/18 at 11:09 am
I just realized Chaney is who Tennessee hired when Orgeron was Asst HC there. I doubt he leaves Georgia for another OC position after the season they are having but thought that was interesting. Wouldn’t be my 1st choice anyway but can think of worse.
re: No word that Sonny Cumbie is a target. Jake Spavital on the list
Posted by Taylor62085 on 1/5/18 at 11:00 am to WaWaWeeWa
Cumbie looks better & better. TCU took huge strides when he came on as Co-OC & got even better this year when Meacham left & it was his show. He is tier 1, Sark is tier 2, Yurcich is tier 3, and Spavital/Gilbert/Ensminger is tier 72
re: Mike D “Next years OC is NOT on staff right now.”
Posted by Taylor62085 on 1/5/18 at 10:29 am to PUB
IMO Cumbie would be best case scenario for spread & Sark for pro-style. Yurcich would be a slight improvement over Canada. Spavital, Gilbert, Ensminger are all steps in the wrong direction.

LSU actually averaged over half a yard more per play than Baylor last year. They just had one of the highest tempo offenses and we were one of the slowest.
