If Saban had made bad land investments or whatever, wouldn't we know about it? Everyone knew about John L. Smith's bankruptcy.

It's been known for a while that he got caught up in the real estate bust. Been talked about on TD more than once.

If he was in debt or a part of a big land development deal gone bad, he could just demand an emormous raise from UAT for past performance or lean on boosters to dig him out.
There's a difference between Nick Saban being in debt and John L. Smith being in debt.
