What people forget about Saban was his reputation as a defensive mastermind was well established by the late 1980s. There's a reason why he and Belichik are the best two coaches in history in their respective leagues. Riley is just one of many Air Raid coaches from the Mumme/Leach tree. He stepped into a strong program built by Stoops and improved it.

The real truth is that LSU was willing to make the changes that Saban wanted which Michigan state would not make.

He didn’t know till he got to LSU either . He wasn’t Winning them at Toledo or Michigan state

LSU doesn’t need Riley to win a natty but Riley needs LSU to win one
