saban coaching tree...a myth..?? overrated?

seeing smart (biggest protege to date) not doing so hot at Georgia...muschamp bombing at florida...mac is average. jimbo is solid but was brought in with saban when he came to lsu...dont know how much of his success can be attributed to saban.
personally i think his tree is dying. it would be interesting to see how much kiffen inproves under him however

It's still a pretty impressive list.
Muschamp is the only bust so far although Kirby seems to be heading down that path. Still too early to tell for him.

I agree with all but Smart. I don't think it's fair to make a judgement on him just yet. Give him at least 2 years.

jimbo comes from the bowden tree. he played for and coached under terry bowden before he hooked up with saban. obviously coach in waiting under bobby bowden.

Some of his guys fall victim to the peter principle, aka keep rising in rank until they are incompetent (read: MUSCHAMP). Kirby's in his first year, but if trends continue he could be another case.

It's really hard to evaluate coaches under Saban.
He has total control over his programs and I don't think he lets them coach as much as they get credit for, especially on defense.
He does let the offensive guys a lot more latitude because that's not his specialty.
Muschamp and Smart so far have not done well, it's still way early for Smart who has paid his dues.
Dooley was never a coordinator at Power 5 before he took LA Tech gig.
Fisher has been successful.
Kiffin has been a reclamation project, give him the keys, no telling what he will do back on his own with no one to rein him in.

Many times when a leader controls the entire process the people in the system are just following the highly organized structure. This type of system works extremely well in creating consistency and success as long as the "head" is always attached. Unfortunately when you pluck what you think is "key" personal out in order to duplicate the success of the system they were in.... many times you find out that they were just a worker bee and didn't have real vision or input into decisions.
It happens in business, coaching, etc. It is a risky thing once you see a couple of those people fail. The key is to figure out if the leader hires truly competent innovative people or puppets. While there are exceptions to every rule/guideline, it appears Saban hires puppets who do just what he says. I would be skeptical of hiring from his "tree".
