They probably did. I don't think O was ever in the top tier of the coaching search. The media are the ones that were hyping his possible stay and some of the fans.

How to you make that offer at the 3 games into a season. Second I'm sure this was a preemptive attempt to beat UT to the punch. This will get really interesting.

You don't hire a coach away that quickly into the season. This was always gonna be a challenge once other big jobs opened up.

Or...the gentleman's agreement is true pending Orgeron's performance. If O fails or succeeds than notification is made, we'll, tomorrow. Herman would have to hedge, just in case, by entertaining/not entertaining UT. This would mean Herman understood the political forces behind giving Orgeron a fair chance and agreed with it.
LSU, does have a very powerful alumni base in Houston and certainly has had contact with him. I know, "UT money" but who wants to coach at a place where - one way or another- you are answering to Mack Brown?
