We thought the same thing about Peterson and Boise St. Finally jumped for UW and turned them around immediately.

Patterson would be an absolute home run for UT, I'd argue a better fit and better hire than even Gruden.

Boise State salary 2 million and a glorified community college with almost no resources.
Washington salary 4.875 million.

Comparing Boise/Washington to TCU/Tennesee is kinda really off the rails.

If we are talking John Gruden - yeah, almost anyone would be a better hire than a guy who last coached a game close to 10 years ago and last coached in the college ranks close to 20 years ago.

I disagree,

TCU is a program that has done great things under his leadership but can only go so far. UT (for all their woes) has the resources to win it all. I could easily see a 2-3M jump in his salary from the 5.1M he's currently getting at TCU. Which would be right in line in terms of pay w the comparison you think is "kinda really off the rails".

UT finally seems to be getting the message that you can't nickel and dime coaching hires, Michigan had to figure this out as well. If it's Patterson or Gruden, they'll command 7M+ per year, and I think they'll pay it.

Washington is a unique opportunity for almost any coach. You live / work in Seattle. You have access to really good (almost great) resources. You can get recruits to the college if you work at it.

Washington has been in the wilderness for a while, but it's a historically good program. UW is in the top 20 for wins and win %; they've got 2 NC's and 16 Pac 10 titles.

Tennessee has that kind of history -- better, even -- but does it still have the resources? Can you still get recruits to Tennessee?

See where that $7mm is getting Michigan with JH...

You pay someone that kind of money. It’s win now, sec championship, playoff bound all within 2 yrs.

Michigan is relevant and competitive, and they'll probably be top 10 or even 5 next year (they lost their entire D), what are you talking about? Have you forgotten what Hoke or Dick Rod looked like???

You mean like by winning the Big 12 3 years ago (tied with Baylol) and being a cat's whisker away from in the playoffs?

That's what TCU is paying him. There's the rumor of oil wells and etc. that are not included in his TCU money.

The off the rails comment was more than just about money. Boise really is a glorified community college. They are a Greater 5 school. No natural recruiting. No money to speak of (endowment of $88 million? wtf?). No history.

Boise/Washington/TCU/Tennessee. Which of those doesn't belong? Its easy to pick out and its easy to see why Petersen would choose to leave Boise for Washington. Whereas TCU to Tennessee, where Gary probably wouldn't be getting any more money when all things are added in, would be in the SEC versus the Big 12, recruiting is probably a push, facilities maybe a push.. just don't see the upside.

I wonder if there might be mutual interest between ATM and Patterson.

Who was the last college football non blue blood to win a national championship? Colorado? BYU? I also think UT holds an edge in a lot of the categories you're calling a push. In terms of money, I'm sure UT would have plenty of incentives built in to increase his compensation accordingly, esp if successful.

I think the upside is substantial but maybe not everyone agrees, we'll see what GP thinks soon enough.

I'd be down for it. But I just don't see him leaving TCU until he retires.

They've won 2, I don't know if I'd agree with that.

How does winning two titles over your history make you a blue blood?

I think you’re going off a misconception. Most thought GP was a TCU lifer at this point.

However, information has come out in the last couple of weeks that Patterson has actively sought other jobs in the past. He didn’t simply pass on those opportunities, other schools passed on him.

Patterson also hinted that he might be interested in the Nebraska position. Said that he interviewed with Tom Osborne before Nebraska eventually hired Pelini. Patterson is on new AD Moos’ short list of candidates; of course Scott Frost is their primary target
