I’m honestly really conflicted here. Both have great resumés and seem to understand QB play enough to put a stop to the horrors we witnessed last Saturday.

They each come with concerns:

Jimbo: Can he either run an offense that can keep up or relinquish/share play calling duties?
WTF happened at FSU post-Winston? It was worse than LSU post-Burrow.

Riley: Can he adjust to the need for defense in the SEC? I know 2018 Bama and 2019 LSU were elite and transcendent respectively but quite a few teams defended them better than OU.
Similarly can his offensive style translate to SEC play? Even with a great QB you have to be able to run the ball.

Which one has beaten Saban?

I know Jimbo has laid his eggs too. 50-7 was an embarrassment even against tGOAT.

He beat Saban when Saban's team almost lost to an LSU team that was down to darn near it's third string defensive backs, an OC that doesn't know what he's doing, and a jumpy QB.

Not throwing shade at anyone in particular, it's just the truth.

This year's Alabama team is not as good as they typically are.

Riley is better than Jimbo. Not trying to be a jerk but he is.

Now do Riley’s bad games. Theres a lot more. He almost lost to Kansas and Texas this year.

I just find it kind of depressing that our seemingly top choices both got absolutely rinsed and dried by the guy we’re firing.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by this.

He still won, correct?

He almost lost to Tulane too.

Still won.

Both coaches are really good. Riley did inherit a great program left for him when Bob Stoops retired and they play in a conference LSU would dominate, and Ok has dominated. I would welcome either coach here.

50-7
63-28

I know that was a titanic team but we were laughing our asses off at both of them.

I'd be happy, beyond happy, if Woodward got Riley.

I'll leave it at that.

The guy has gotten to the playoffs three years in a row, I get it, but his record in the playoffs..... I get it.

The guy would be a homerun hire.

Us beating them in 2019 was a combination of Burrow, Brady, Aranda.

I'll leave it there.

Not trying to derail this thread.

He very well could see that the days of playing lesser conference teams (basically rent a wins but they are conference wins) are coming to a close and if he got a substantial offer, maybe that would be enough to convince him to leave.

but I get your point too.

I’d prefer Riley over Jimbo, however, Jimbo has proven that he can build a program and Riley has not. Don’t get me wrong, I think he has definitely elevated OU since taking over from Stoops but the fact is, the ground work had been done. Jimbo followed Bowden but then went to A&M and has show that he can put his mark on the program. I’m hoping Riley comes here and proves the same thing.

The thing is, Riley is basically Will Wade's age. He's this good and he's just getting started. He's going to get better as a coach pretty much every year.

I'm good with either one, as we've never really hired a top tier coach for football other than Saban. But at this point Riley would have the higher ceiling. He's already made the playoffs three times and he's barely even into his prime as a coach.

Completely agree. The guy isn't even 40 years old.

It’s all just depressing to me.

We were having so much fun with O, and I really believed he would turn it around after the Covid year. There’s still a tiny part of me that thinks he could with two experienced coordinators and some better injury luck.

O was, objectively, one of the all-time worst hires of a top-tier college football program.

He wasn't a young coach who had a rough go of it in a previous gig. He was an old coach who'd been around for decades who finally BS'ed his way into a job at Ole Miss and proved he couldn't handle it.

He was a proven failure. That he was able to win here shows what a total Ferrari of a program this is.

Nobody should cry for O. He got to taste the rainbow and he's walking away with a pot of gold after botching things in legendary style. The real issue is the wasted opportunity by Alleva. If he'd made a legitimate hire in 2015 or 2016, you'd probably still have had 2019 PLUS we'd be in the top 5 right now (and likely coming off another road win over Bama).

I don’t think this is a defensible argument when he was the HC of objectively one of the greatest seasons in college football history.

Yes, I know the 3 assistants and QB did the heavy coaching but he still brought them together and was a great motivator.

It means Coach O or basically his team has waxed both a/m and Oklahoma - it’s not that hard to understand

That was done by the greatest offense in the history of college football, a lot of teams got embarrassed. Riley’s team in ‘19 was grossly overmatched and Jimbo had better athletes on defense and still got shredded and scored only 7.
