recruiting in south Florida might get a little harder

This flew under the radar, and I haven't seen it mentioned on this board, but Stephen Field, who had recently returned to Louisville as recruiting director, has left to join Manny Diaz's staff at Miami. When he was on staff at UL in 2017, they had one of their best classes ever. He left to go to Oregon last year, and they ended up with an outstanding class this cycle. He is from south Florida and could provide a major boost to Miami's recruiting and make it more difficult for SEC schools (and others) to pull kids out of that area.

So was LSU in the 90s. There is no reason Miami can't be a dominant program again. All it takes is the right coach and a staff that can keep a lot of that south Florida talent home. I hope it doesn't happen, of course, but dismissing Miami because they've been bad the last few years is short-sighted. As all the investment companies say, "past performance is not a reliable predictor of future returns."

Miami has wooed kids to death and gotten momentum and early commits over the past few years. Issue is they haven't been stable enough to close out the kids. All those kids down there are looking for is a reason to believe in the Canes again and they'll flock. Right coach that's able to not have questions about the staff arise yearly at the end of the cycle and the classes will be excellent. Haven't seen that in a while.
The biggest issue at Miami is the administration. Shalala is better for the school than she is the football program.

There will always be guys from Miami that leave the area and go play at other schools. No one coach is going to change that. He may slow the numbers that leav down but they will always be a few every cycle.

Miami has fallen way behind in the arms race to have top notch facilities. That will put them at a disadvantage when recruiting against the big boys.

I don't disagree. Of course good players in south Florida will continue to go to other schools (including us, I'm sure) but if Diaz can lift Miami from its present state of mediocrity more of those players will opt to stay home than is now the case. Same thing that happened with LSU; once upon a time, many (most?) of the truly outstanding players in Louisiana opted to go elsewhere. Yes, we still lose some, but we get most of the Louisiana players we really want. My point was simply that Field is an ace recruiter with great south Florida connections, and that his presence at Miami could very well have a negative impact on our ability to lure some of those players to Baton Rouge. What effect this has long term will depend on how successful Diaz is, of course.

What made butch so good was he could evaluate better than anyone. If he whiffed on a top kid he could find diamonds in 2nd or third tier recruits

He did an amazing job finding those guys while they were on probation.

Sigh....OK, I'll play your little game. Here's our record for each year from 89 to 99:
89 - 4-7
90 - 5-6
91 - 5-6
92 - 2-9
93 - 5-6
94 - 4-7
95 - 7-4-1
96 - 10-2
97 - 9-3
98 - 4-7
99 - 3-8
Total record for these eleven years was 58-65-1. Yes, there were a couple of good years, but overall, I would posit that in the 90s (yes, I've included 89 here, as it was the year this dark period began) the Tigers were much worse than Miami has been in recent years. Which is the point I was trying to make: just because a team has a stretch of bad years, that doesn't mean they are doomed to be mediocre forever. But if it makes you feel better to argue that eight losing seasons in eleven years doesn't qualify as a "train wreck," go right ahead.

There are actually a lot of reasons, starting with the fact that their average attendance is just over 50,000 fans and if you look at their top 25 all-time highest attended games, only ONE is post-2002. They don’t have the fan support to be a major program in this day and age, and social media/video cameras on every cell phone has ruined what once gave them their competitive edge.
The U isn’t luring kids in with coke, huge amounts of cash, and hookers anymore. The NCAA would give their program the death penalty in a month if they operated it in a way that would make them relevant again

Valid points....Miami fans are notoriously fair weather, not just for the U but also for the Dolphins. (We won't even talk about the Marlins.) It's certain that the lack of a rabid fan base could be a drag on the program, but I don't think it's a killer. (The fans will show up if the team is winning, although the base is certainly smaller than the bigger public university programs.) Someone else mentioned the lack of up-to-date facilities, and that might a more important negative factor. Still....I think the right coach could overcome these, or at least, mitigate them to a certain extent. As someone else pointed out, lots of south Florida kids would like to go to Miami if the program gave them a reason to do so. It'll be interesting to see how things develop down there with the new coaching staff.

You're being overdramatic. Miami can only recruit 25 kids every year.

You’re a special kind of stupid, aren't you?
7 losing seasons in 10 years is a train wreck. Winning a few games does not change that.
Oh, I don’t need to do the research. I lived through it. I was at LSU for every one of the six straight losing seasons we had from 1989-1994.

Miami could very well be a power again, but they won't be until the administration decides to commit to it. Manny Diaz was an uninspired and boring hire.

Wouldn't a strong Miami help LSU more than hurt it by siphoning off talent that otherwise would have gone to UF?
