Looking at the scores they have lost a decent amount of close games as well.

Maybe they can improve to the independence bowl next season for Jumbo

SEC road game. It could happen. I don’t think it will but they have players too

Be real though, would you even notice how hot the seat was if you had 89 mill tucked in your back pockets? Would you even care?

I do think just like Jimbo's first contract set the new standard, how it's going now is going to change the way universities structure these contracts. I foresee something like buyout reductions based on performance are going to become a thing.

3 losses or less, buyout schedule remains the same

4 losses, buyout schedule starting the next year is reduced 5%

5 losses, buyout schedule starting the next year is reduced another 10%

Etc. Continued poor performance starts to add up and makes it realistic for the school to get out from under a perpetually poor performing coach.

This one doesn’t make sense. You’re talking about firing a coach that’s 9-3 10-2 or in the playoffs. Why would you want to do that? If you are to that point where the relationship has completely broken down despite winning either he’s already looking around or his AD better be getting his resume together.

No. The point is that at 3 losses or less, performance is acceptable and the buyout doesn't change. The coach retains guaranteed contract status, but if he has a 4 loss season, that buyout goes down 5%. It's just a little easier for the school to move on. Multiple seasons of 4 and 5 losses gives the school some wiggle room for getting rid of a coach who isn't performing.

It would sting, but I look at it this way:
a) We're going to Atlanta regardless,
b) We have little chance of beating UGA,
c) probably 50% chance we miss out on the playoffs if we win

This season was supposed to be a practice run for Kelly to acclimate to the SEC, and somehow he pulled an SEC West title out of his arse.

Maybe A&M can extend Jimbo again if he beats us

Not remotely true. It's just that AD's have unlimited booster cash, and boosters don't care of they have to keep firing and hiring because their money is less important to them than winning. It's an arms race, and why AD's do stuff that no one in the real would would even consider.

The going rate for a top-tier coach is pretty much what we paid Kelly. It was insane when A&M set that market a few years ago, but salaries have increased to meet that mark.

What was insane was A&M unnecessarily extending Jimbo after 2020, which was not a season to predict future results off of. They also had no competition trying to pull him away at the time. It was ridiculous and now they are paying the price. If they hadn’t made that move, his buyout wouldn’t be that bad today.
