Yeah... comparing a guy in his 1st stint as a Defensive Coordinator at the FBS level versus a guy getting fired from his 6th stop as DC makes a lot of sense...



It makes more sense than using one season as a reason to not promote or hire a guy.

But let's look at his time at defensive powerhouse Purdue. When he took over the Boilermakers had allowed 30.6 PPG the previous season and under Diaco they allowed 29.8 PPG. Almost a point better on scoring defense. Considering what Purdue typically has to work with, I wouldn't say that is as awful as you try to make it sound. In the previous 10 years, here are the years Purdue had a defense that held their opponents to fewer PPG than Diaco's did in 2020.

2010 - 29.1
2011 - 29.5
2017 - 20.5

I'm not advocating for Diaco but he would not be a bad hire there if that happened
