My god. You thought this thread is about hiring Slocum in 2016?

Hey, forget it Gray Tiger. I'm not even going to give you another arse kicking.

I feel sorry for you. I hope your kids and grandkids get you the proper care for your dementia.

You pathetic delicate little flower. I know what you are doing. You are throwing a tantrum by bringing up every stupid scenario that creeps through your sad little brain. You poor little man( woman?) your butt hurt crusade to try to denigrate anything LSU is juvenile at best. You bring up Slocum because? Why because of who WAS hired in 2005. You didn't get your way then and you didn't get your way recently.

Bless your little heart you never get your way do you? Everybody is out to get you? Life is dismal because everybody is against you?
So you just cry, bitch, cry some more.

Again with the age comments? That's it? That's your big BOOM?
You are such a sad little person, stewing in your misery. But funny to read.

If you're so determined on being angry about the past, consider the fact that Steve Spurrier was passed over in favor of Mike Archer

Slocum was thought of as washed up at that time and past his prime. Pretty much what schools are feeling about Les Miles today.

The only good thing i can think of that would have come from that hire is the return of Coach Slocum on a mobile

RC had some stifling defenses, but he started getting WAY too conservative on offense. He would sit on a 3 point lead, running FB dives (I still remember Jamar Toombs, his FB) the rest of the way trying to squeak one out. He was too stubborn to update his offense (sound familiar?), and it caught up to him.

Think about it... What did he go on to do? It wasn't like we missed on a great, "can't miss" or "guru" hire. A few years later, his name was irrelevant throughout the college football landscape.

Eh, I didn't want LSU to hire him because I think he got burned out after A&M won the Big XII, but it's a bit harsh to say his name became irrelevant IMO.

RC won a ton of games, sent a lot of players to the NFL, had a bunch of future HCs as assistants, got inducted into the college football HOF and has a building named after him at A&M. Anyone who followed the sport in the 80s and 90s will remember his Wrecking Crew defenses if nothing else.

Yeah, you are right about my comments being a little too harsh. I basically meant that it wasn't like we missed out on him like we did with Spurrier when we hired Archer. Slocum didn't go on after his tenure at A&M, but sure, he had some stellar defenses and overall great teams during his tenure.

I appreciate the discussion!

OP, according to that almost 2 hr rambling interview Skip gave on 104.5 a few mths ago, he was ready to hire Jack Del Rio & had the votes lined up to make it happen. But as they were waiting in the restaurant to make the offer, they could see Del Rio sitting in his car in the parking lot out front. On the phone. It was in his contract that before he could even interview with any team, he had to let the owner know. And the owner was in Europe & Del Rio could not contact him. According to Skip, the interview never took place that day & while waiting to make it happen, he convinced the Board to hire CLM. All this per Skip in his own words.

I was in the minority but I thought R C Slocum would have been a helluva hire in 2005. He was three-time SWC Coach of the Year and the Aggies' all-time winningest coach. I think he would have succeeded greatly at LSU following Saban. He was pressured to resign after fourteen years following his only .500 season.

First off, he wasn't pressured to resign, he was fired by Gates because he refused to resign and because he no longer had his bean-counter AD, Wally Groff, protecting him.

2-11

That was Slocum's record in bowl games.

55-32

That was Slocum's record in the Big 12.

34-22

That was Slocum's conference record in the Big 12.

8-13

That was Slocum's record vs. t.u., Texas Tech, and Oklahoma as a member of the Big 12.

3-9

That was Slocum's combined record vs. Mack Brown, Bob Stoops, and Mike Leach.

1

The number of linebackers signed between the 1999-2002 recruiting classes.

Let's take a closer look at his Big 12 teams' start vs. finish.

1996 - Preseason AP #13. Finished 6-6 and unranked.

1997 - Preseason Unranked. Finished 9-4 and #20.

1998 - Preseason AP #14. Finished 11-3 and #11.

1999 - Preseason AP #7. Finished 8-4 and #23.

2000 - Preseason Unranked. Finished 7-5 and Unranked.

2001 - Preseason Unranked. Finished 8-4 and Unranked.

2002 - Preseason AP #23. Finished 6-6 and Unranked.

Slocum would have been a horrible hire. He won at Texas A$M when Texas was way down. They were in the SWC. A$M had TCU, SMU, Houston, Rice, Baylor, Texas and Texas Tech as permanent opponents. They coupled that with out of conference foes like Tulsa and USL. They even lost to USL once.

A$M would win 9-10 games easily against a cupcake schedule and get rolled in a bowl game. Look at Slocums bowl record. That will tell you all you need to know. Slocum was an older less obnoxious version of Curley Hallman.

RC would have not won the 2007 BCSCG and if you think Miles shift to run run run into the middle of stacked lines was frustrating, it would have started from day 1 with RC

RC did not want the job, and secondly, I do NOT think he would have been a home-run hire. Skip should have:

1. Paid Saban and he would have stayed
2. Waited a week and hire Jack Del Rio (will be NFL coach of the year) because he wanted to come to LSU
3. In the end, he hired Les, and he had a very good run, but it was time to go.

I am not a Skip B fan. He screwed us on Saban and Del Rio.

Whoever on this board is not a Skip fan when u factor in his whole body of work at LSU is not an true LSU fan. I guess u were not a fan of his when Omaha/Rosenblatt was his bitch!! Think before u type. If u not a fan of Skip the Athletic Director, I can respect that, but if u were not a fan of Skip the coach/manager then u just stupid!! Plain and simple.
