Serious question: Do you guys regret not retaining Coach O?

I have a buddy of mine (lifelong USC fan from that area) that loved him as a coach, but he doesn't regret seeing O go. He felt that O would have eventually grown tired of the southern California culture and never would have fit in.

Sark was going to do well there until he lost control of his life, I think.
Their problem is honestly not being able to hire anyone NOT off the pete carroll tree.

Another huge difference is O has taken over for Les Miles here as opposed to Kiffin out at USC. He's filling much bigger shoes here.
I personally just want what's best for us winning. I'm a Jimbo Fisher guy. I just hope that's still a possibility.
With that said, I'm not opposed to O yet. It's been difficult to keep him from growing on me. He keeps winning... who knows??? He's pushed all the right buttons so far. I'll definitely give him that. I refuse to just view him as 'the guy that sucked at Ole Miss'. That's not a fair evaluation at all. He says he's learned and changed since then, and so far it looks like he's proving it.

HC or no HC, O has to be retained somehow. Even if that means making him the highest paid DL coach in football, do it.

You're right about that. Orgeron is definitely a lot smarter than people like to admit. I for one, am just uneasy about him becoming the man. I like that he's from down here. I just think you can't hire the guy strictly based on what he does in the interim. Unless of coarse, he wins out which would probably result in a natty.

I have quite a few SC friends, and they're our biggest rival, if that counts.
I think most of them want to extricate themselves however possible from the Carroll tree (which included Orgeron and now includes Helton) at this point. It's a prime position, and they just tend to be a little nepotistic at times. That's my sense of it, anyway.

To answer the question, no, I don't regret it. I'm a huge Orgeron fan but I had my doubts about him leading the program. I thought for sure Haden would go out and hire Jack Del Rio. I was completely stunned with the Sark hire.

I didn't want him at the time because I was hoping USC could pull Petersen or another proven coach, but I would have taken him over Seven Win Steve or Helton.

I'll admit that I was including Helton as he was an assistant under both Kiffin and Sarkisian. You would know better than I, but the SC people I know just want to go in a very different direction than anything associate with Carroll/Kiffin/Sark (and Del Rio is like options 1, 2, and 3 with those guys).

This is a bleacher report article written by a USC guy at the time Sark was fired. I know bleacher report gets a bad wrap around here but they are really just a platform and this is one of the USC beat writers. Take it for what it's worth, but I think it's pretty poignant considering a lot of posters on here seem obsessed with chasing the next big name.

No, he's still clueless out there. He's been bailed out by Sam Darnold and a horrific Pac 12. Also, recruiting is very bad right now.
