Piling on ST Coach Duties

Many programs have a position coach double as ST. Why couldn’t LSU give Mangas or Calloway ST in addition to their duties, make McMahon an analyst/advisor, and free up an extra on field coach for Defense?

Yes, that is possible. But our special teams have been very good.

No disrespect, but let's see how it all plays out first, then we can discuss things like this, we don't even know who's in, out, are even analyst at this point, LOL..

Agreed 100%. Just wanting to have a different convo. I am not a coach, GM, nor athletic advisor.
I just don’t see ST needing an on the field coach. I believe this can be done by an analyst/advisor.

If you recruit 5* kickers, nothing else matters.
Rules have changes so much.

He wasn’t an on field coach his first year at LSU only an analyst and our ST was $h!t!

Why mess with something that seems to be working, when they tried the shared ST duties before it was a mess. That’s why O went out and hired a dedicated ST coordinator.

I’ve kind of grown use to field goals going through the uprights and punts pinning the opponents inside their own 20 yard line.

That was when there were only 9 assistants. As soon as the 10th was added by the NCAA McMahon was named full-time ST coach.

So you think the guy that was a DB and coached TEs/DBs is now teaching kickers technique?

LSU pays Bobby April $50k to drive over from Slidell to be an analyst. Maybe they could designate another analysts with the full time responsibilities.

Yeah.. you’re an idiot for looking at a majority of coaching staffs and realizing that they don’t have a guy who only coaches special teams.
You stupid arse!!
I love shouting people down, being disrespectful/sarcastic and acting tough on this message board. Makes me feel like a man.

It’s certainly a legitimate question. Hardly anyone had a special teams coordinator prior to 2018.
When the 10th assistant was added in 2018, there was much debate on the best use of the spot.
LSU chose to add the ST position.
LSU has also chosen to have a GA handle the tight ends, which a novel thing that few teams do. That made space for the PGC.

I’d personally like to see 6 offensive coaches and 4 defensives coaches.
One of those guys can help with special teams.

This doesn't help the coaching limit issue, but related nonetheless...
I've always though kick coverages should be the DC (or DB), kick returns the OC (or WR) and ST coach should be someone who can actually coach kickers, including punters.
Almost all of CFB relies on camps to train their kickers. When on gets jacked up on mountain dew in the head all they do is replace him.
And kickers cost games.

Mac does more than just on field ST coaching. People are just trying to create a 6th offensive coach spot for Callaway which is unnecessary. I get people are worried that he may leave but it is coaching and with coaching is turnover.
I hope he stays but not at the expense of another offensive coach or a shorthanded defensive spot.

Was this directed at me? The only thing I said was I’ve grown use to our field goals going through the uprights and our punts pinning our opponents inside their 20. Whatever we are doing coaching these guys kicking the ball keep doing it.

Urban Meyer says one of the reasons his w/l percentage is so high is special teams. Most coaches used to treat ST as an afterthought. Meyer made it equal to O and D. Many elite programs followed suit.
Bad idea, half-stepping ST.
