He called Alleva, gave his personal regards for Coach O.
As we know, Pete Carroll had a lot to lose if Coach O fails, no way he'd just call to give his buddy a nice job deservedly or not...

I don't recall Pete Carroll calling USC and begging them to hire Coach O. Has Pete Carroll offered Coach O a spot on his squad in Seattle? Pete Carroll owes Coach O a favor for pushing Joe McKnight away from LSU and to USC.

It's the truth and it happens all the time in coaching searches. Some times head coaches talk up asst coaches to other places to help them get jobs just so they can get rid of them. I'm not saying that's what Petey was doing, but it's not an unheard of thing for coaches to give recommendations whether warranted or not.
