Well, it’s definitely “High risk / High reward” hire.

Well you already look like an idiot...

Such as?
The guys who are obviously good hires are not easy to get. We saw that with Freeman - we tried and weren’t able to get him.
The easy hires carry risk. It’s just a question of how much. I think we could have easily hired Derek Mason. But would that have been a “good” hire? Even Nielsen was a risk from the standpoint that he didn’t have coordinator experience. But he was an experienced recruiter.
There are really only two ways to make the obviously “good” hire. Either your timing has to be perfect - e.g. you have an opening right when a coach is ready to make the jump from a lesser program - or you have to throw a lot of money at them. Aranda is a good example of a hire that was a combination of both at the time. We tripled his Wisconsin salary and had an opening at the right time. But coaching salaries have gone up since then and LSU, despite what many fans believe, does not have “frick you money” compared to the other top programs.
Your question is a bit like asking “why can’t we have our cake and eat it too?”

We clearly didn't have the money for that kind of hire. Revenue is down across the board and we still owe Pelini nearly $5M. I think that's why we missed on Freeman and started chasing NFL position coaches.
But hey, it could work. Why not?

Genius is an option.

I can follow his train of thought. We struck gold by pulling Brady from the lower rungs of the Saints org. After we missed on Freeman (because ND outbid us), his first thought was to go back to the well -- to the Saints organization. That didn't work out, so he started doing his research and settled on a promising position coach who (a) coached a Top 10 NFL secondary, (b) is familiar with Louisiana, and (c) comes recommended by Aranda.
Genius? IDK. But I can see this working.

I’m trying to figure out what metric you found a top 10 NFL secondary.
Minnesota was bad in most metrics.
Cincy was pretty bad too in 2018 and 2019

Pelini was far from a no brained. He was easy to hire. But it wasn’t an obvious hire by a mile.

This hire wrecks with cheapness and thats what we will get.
In my opinion we traded a "Has-Been" for a "Nobody"

All the people melting should look on the bright side. You all want Orgeron gone so bad, if this turns out to be a terrible hire, you’ll get your wish
And if he is successful they'll still fricking find something to bitch about!

hy does it have to be some brilliant hire? Why can’t he just make a easy good hire.
Thats what he did Sammy. None of us on this board know what went on and how hard it is to get a coach to come here with all the jobs open. I would think location becomes part of the equation as much as the school. I think the coach you are working for has some weight too. These guys are taking these jobs with hopes of advancing in the not so distant future. I think we hired this guy because of him being a defensive coach in the pros and has proven to be a good secondardy coach as well. jmo

You pretty much summed up every coach except Dabo and Nick

Meh, 99% of this board had never heard of Jones before last week, and Orgeron tried hiring two other guys before him.
I'm optimistic Jones will work out, but let's not pretend this hire was as "calculated" as you're suggesting. We needed someone, apparently Aranda recommended him, and that was enough.
