Sounds a lot like LSU circa 1999

Big difference between LSU and Texas Aggie is that LSU has and will always be the flagship of the state. LSU will always be able to bounce back from periods of depression simply because it is the flagship University. Schools like UCLA and Texas Aggie, are in the shadow of USC and UT, and don't have the luxary of hibernating and waking in an explosion of dominance like an LSU.

Texas has 10x more people than Louisiana. Houston has more people than Louisiana.

I'm pretty sure Texas athletes can support multiple elite programs.

Also, parts of N La are as close or closer to A&M than LSU

No Texas does not contain 45 million people.
And no Houston does not contain 4.5 million people, in fact not even 2 million. Stop blurting bullshite out of your arse.
Per capita Louisiana trumps Texas in NFL quality talent which is much more important to the discussion considering Louisiana supports one elite program (LSU) while Texas supports all of the Texas programs, Oklahoma programs, and LSU.
It is retarded to try to compare a 1999 LSU program to a 2011 Aggie program.

Houston has an urban population of 3.8 million and a metro population of around 5.9 million.

Houston's 2010 census population was 2,099,451. As for metro I know Houston+Katy+Baytown etc.... had a combined pop greater than Louisuana, its just that when I read that dumbass 10* population statement I knew that he didnt know what the hell he was talking about.

It was hyperbole. I didn't check the exact census. Do you feel better if I say TX has 5.6 times more people in Louisiana and the greater Houston area is more populated than Louisiana?

And in 1999 LSU had 3 winning seasons in the previous 11 years (just read that in an article, I did not fact check). A&M has had i believe 6 (counting by memory) with a possibility of 7 this year. We aren't in as bad a shape now as LSU was then

I think that we are on different wavelengths at the moment. As I said earlier TAMU can one day become a top 8 program nationally, but as of now it is in pretty bad shape. By 1999 LSU was already back to being in state kids number 1 choice, by the time that 01 class of Spears, Clayton, and Hill, there was no way a top kid in state wasn't going to LSU. All I was saying is that it is unreasonable to compare present day TAMU to 1999 LSU or a mid 2000 Bama because those programs were flagship programs ready to be awaken.

The SEC's dominance in football athletes is a result of demographics. Texas has a population of 25 million of which 11% are African American. Louisiana's 4.5 million are about 1/3 AA, and the state has only one major college football program. Very few Louisiana blue chips leave the state, leaving LSU with a huge talent pool. Texas athletes are recruited by four big in-state programs, plus OU and OSU, and Missouri. LSU and Arkansas cherry pick also. If this sounds racist, sorry, it's the truth.

Every comparison does not have to be 100% equal on all counts. I was responding to a comment that A&M was a place coaches go to get fired, which is what people said about LSU circa 1999 and we had fired 4 of 5 coaches in a 20 year span.

I agree with what you said about LSU. I'm one of a handful of posters that given Gerry D some credit for laying the foundation (he did need to geaux when he was fired), he did greatly improve recruiting in state getting roughly 70% of the top players, Saban took it to the next level where we now get 99% of the top players.

I don't agree that A&M is in bad shape. They had a bad season, but remember all those 2nd Half collapses came after building big leads over really good teams, including #3 OSU and #6 Arkansas and a 4 OT road loss to #8 KSU. They have a great recruiting class lined up and Sherm did have couple of other good classes. They lose a lot so they will struggle next year, but if they make the right hire they could be competitive a lot sooner than people think.

Pros - Football first mentality fanbase. Large state school (largest in SEC) with good resources. Located in Texas as only SEC school with talent rich Houston 80 miles away. Traditions.

Interesting...substitute LA for Tejas & New Orleans for Houston, & this would resemble the LSU list in 2000 when $aban came in to start reversing 2 decades of mostly mediocre Tigah football.

IMHO, aTm is another sleeping giant that, with the right coaching hire, could contend for SECCG appearances in 5 years. $aban actually got there in year 2.

The obvious better jobs would be: UT, Florida, Bama, USC, Ohio State, FSU, OU, LSU, UGA, Michigan and Nebraska.

Dark clouds hanging over Miami and Penn State. Wisconsin has become a great job. Tennessee has everything except in-state talent.

Wisconsin is ok, but not a better contender that A&M could become.
Oregon recruits better than A&M, unless things change, straight out of Houston.

Tennessee has a better national recruiting pipeline.
Nebraska is questionable, it doesn't have the pipeline of the Joseph family out of NOLA anymore.

So take a few of the questionable ones out, A&M could go as low as 12th or 13th.

And A&M isn't redneck or racist like many outsiders think. It's the job of our recruiters to show that to recruits. I know 2 schools very well, A&M and LSU. A&M is far less racist of those two and LSU recruits black athletes very well.

I knew it. I was wondering how long it would take the Texass fan base to start throwing this out.

frick you.

LOL at people insinuating A&M is racist. Best 4.5 years of my life were spent on that campus and my family still calls College Station home. We've had zero race problems, I'm happy to report.
