Unofficial..

Per Jane Slater

quote:

#LSU is working on finalizing a deal to name #Saints assistant Ryan Nielsen their new Defensive Coordinator sources tell me. Nielsen met with Sean Payton and told him of his intention to take the job earlier today.

Brooks Kubena of The Advocate also reporting. LSU Finalzing Deal w/ Nielsen

quote:

#LSU is reportedly finalizing a deal to make Saints defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen the Tigers defensive coordinator. (@SlaterNFL first among others).

Nielsen played for Ed Orgeron at USC and coached with him at Ole Miss. Could be a comfortable fit.

Also Mike Triplett, the Saints beat reporter.

quote:

Can confirm as @SlaterNFL reported that Saints defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen will become LSU's next defensive coordinator. Maybe the Saints' biggest staff loss yet this offseason, honestly, since Nielsen has done wonders for that position group

Dude was awesome at NC State. Our dline was a monster

And the Saints broke the consecutive games without allowing a 100 yard rusher under him.

So pretty good

Generally it seems to be looked at by LSU fans as a good hire. Relatively unknown name by the masses that don’t follow coaching changes and aren’t hardcore LSU/Saints fans, but he has a good mix of youth, resume, and Orgeron ties that on paper should make him a good fit at LSU with great potential for success.

Like any hire, it will be proven good or not on the field in 2021 and beyond. The good news is that our defense has nowhere to go but up after 2020. Hopefully Neilsen can get us back into the top half of the league in defense, that would be a good first year IMO.

I’m ok with this. Just wanted to avoid retreads. Like the injection of young coaches O bringing in.

This didn't work out well with Freeman. Hope people not jumping the gun.

Hopefully saints won’t block him since he is under contract
I figured Dennis Allen might warrant another head coaching job

Allen is not getting anything this year as most of the jobs are filled already

Agreed. It may or not work, but it definitely felt like time to go younger on the staff, which they did on offense and defense at the top.

I also like that we’re not trying to reinvent the wheel... on offense continue to build on what Brady brought in 2019, and on defense someone younger than can hopefully relate well with the players and create enthusiasm and also work well with Orgeron.

I also agree with you about retreads. While there’s nothing wrong with some retreads, the Pelini thing left a really bad taste in all our mouths that we probably won’t go that route for a while. Kind of like the Mallory/Peveto deal soured us all on co-coordinators for years to come.

All signs point to being a great hire. Young, energetic guy who has put great defensive lines together everywhere he’s been. I’ll be interested to see how the rest of the staff is assembled. Peetz, Mangus, Faulk, Cregg, and Joseph are the current offensive staff, McMahon remains ST coordinator, only Raymond, Nielsen, and O would be defensive staff as it stands.
