Are you seriously comparing his offense mind to that of Malzhan?

ANd who was the coach when Cutler was there?

The whole point of the post was circumstantial as to IF a big time coach was there.

And look at Stanford, there seems to be plenty of "guys like this in the country" to make them near the top of the PAC 10!

Just sayin, it can be done. But you must pay!

No, but he was able to win at LSU and not Vandy.

Recruiting in the PAC10 is not the same as recruiting in the SEC.

Also, he's had winning seasons twice (8-5, 11-1) out of 4 years with only this year in the top 10....and he's rumoured to be thinking about leaving for Michigan or the NFL.

Possibly. GT has done moderately well but they don't play in the SEC either. Stanford is one example of a school like Vandy or Duke competing on a national level in football. Spurrier might be another example at Duke, but he bolted for Florida after going 5-6, 7-3-1, and 8-4...then never won less than 9 games at Florida.

Huh? You are right if you are referring to the fact that the SEC is a better sale to the athelete.

Vandy would pay someone 6 million/per if they knew they could get those results!! Hell, so would Ole Miss, Arky, Miss St, etc

Some of you are making the mistake of thinking Vandy wants to be a Florida or LSU. Vandy has no expectations of being at the top of the SEC. What they do expect is to have a team like Northwestern or Stanford which can have a winning record most years and play in bowl games. And then have that one big year now and then like Stanford is this year.

i understand this, but i think vandy is overestimating themselves to think someone wants to go there and do that for them and not try to parlay it into a bigger/better job.

and if vandy is serious about going to bowls and having an above average football team, they better form an athletic dept ASAP. i know they think its cool that they classify their athletics under an intermural umbrella, but any coach worth their salt is not impressed

YOu are right Ten. The SEC schools should not allow coaches to come in without some restrictions as in going to other schools in SEC. I've always felt this way. Big money should allow the school to do some restrictions that won't allow them to be burnt by that same coach next year within our conference.

And those coaches would end up leaving Vandy for schools where they can compete for championships. Few coaches want to stay at a school where the ceiling isn't a SEC championship or national championship. It's why Saban left Michigan State, Miles left Oklahoma State, Spurrier left Duke, Meyer left Utah, ect.

Vandy paying a coach $3 M might get a coach to come to Vandy, but it isn't going to keep him there. When Mullen was negotiating with MSU, he not only required a raise, but also commitments regarding new facilities and improvements. That is where the big money comes into play that Vandy isn't going to commit to.

That happens today in business...it's called a non-compete clause. The difference is you're not going to find a coach in high demand that's going to agree to that, so that will limit who Vandy is going to be able to hire.

It's just up to Vandy on how much they want to limit their hiring pool.

If Vandy would use some trickle-down economics they might start getting some of those 5 stars.

Schools fire coaches without respecting the contract all the time.

I think its possible to win at Vandy. Northwestern is doing just fine and Stanford had an AWESOME year. I think if Vandy had offered Harbaugh before he left San Diego to take the Stanford job (in other words, nabbed him while he was nabbabale - is that a word?) he could be winning right now at Vanderbilt.
