This statement is so true!

Elko was the target before Aranda reached out and absolutely fleeced LSU.

I'm all for shitting on Alleva but he just solidified Aranda for 4 years with a deal most NFL teams won't match.

DBU - here are the numbers. I guess ND generally does well in recruiting.

2018 - #7 class - 4 stars on D - 3LB, 1S, 1CB, 1DT
2017 - #10 class - 4 stars on D - 1DT, 1LB , 1S
2016 - #15 class - 4 stars on D - 2DE, 2CB, 1LB
2015 - #13 class - 4 stars on D - 3LB, 1CB, 1DT

Quote from sad ND fan,

"When Kelly said Elko would be our DC in 2018, I didn't think he meant only for 3 days of 2018."

I wouldn't care (and I doubt ATM cares) whether they were turned down by anyone now that they secured Elko. I really don't understand the concern.

It's clear to me that ATM was negotiating with several elite candidates simultaneously. That increases their leverage.

LSU may have done this with their HC process or they may have just given the appearance of doing this. Clearly, though, LSU should have identified at least 5 elite candidates and negotiated simultaneously. Alleva ended negotiations too quickly and settled for Orgeron after he didn't, at least preliminarily, get the deal he wanted for either Fisher or Herman.

Would anyone really have cared if LSU wound up with Herman after it had been turned down by Fisher and Fleck? Would we have cared if someone said, "yeah, but you only settled for Herman after Fisher and Fleck turned you down"?

ATM got the DC they wanted. They probably wanted Aranda more, but mission accomplished and congrats to them.

All I know is Elko was talked about on various A&M boards as our target well before an attempt on Aranda was taken seriously by anyone.

So, this has to mean Aranda wanted to leave LSU for Aggy. It couldn't possibly mean Elko demanded $1.8 mil per year and atm decided to see if they could get someone better for that kind of money. Nah, that's impossible.

fricking Aggy.

Apparently they were going to pay more for Aranda than elko even tho aranda was the second option to elko??

That makes no sense

Whatever you need to keep telling yourself.
Elko is a great hire. You should be happy. He would have been on my short list of replacements for Aranda

I don’t know which option was which but I do think Elko was all but locked up around Christmas then something changed with regards to Aranda to make us go hard after him. Who knows what that is.

But we were turned down by Aranda late last night and had a deal in place with Elko by lunch today. That doesn’t happen if there isn’t some framework in place already, and Elko had been mention as a likely target long before.

It doesn’t really matter to me as I like the Elko hire and think Aranda is the type of coordinator absolutely worth pursuing and making him tell you no
