I do think it's flawed thinking to believe that Miami is such a great job anymore. Sure, Florida has tons of talent, but USF, UF, FSU, etc. are all competing for the same kids. If Mullen can coach them up at State he could build something decent long-term. No 90k seat stadium, but decent facilities, a loyal fanbase, and SEC schedule. If he can get MSU to win the west once, I suspect a statue will soon follow.

I'm with you DEG. The State fans filled up their 50,000 plus stadium all year. Miami gets around 30,000 at games that aren't big. The other this is, not everyone wants to live in bigger cities such as Miami. Mullen strikes me as the best fit for State I've seen in my life and I think he can make something there and won't have the pressure that he would at Miami. He's done well already and I really admire him. I pull for State in all games except against our Tigers.

We sold out every home game this year and we hold 56,000 FWIW. We are improving our facilities every year.

We're approaching 30 years since all that shite went down. Lot's have changed. Kids today grew up knowing Florida, USC, Texas, LSU, Alabama, Ohio St., Oklahoma.
Those are the big name programs now. Miami is still living on it's name but if they don't hit a home run with this hire, they may never see solid success like the past again.

Although the Miami job is overrated, Mullen would be MUCH better off taking it.
Not a knock on State at all, but the SEC West isn't going to get easier and being better than Ole Miss every year is not going to raise your coaching profile.
Miami has few fans int he stadium, but a lot of fans around the country around like Dmitch -- and Mullen could win a lot of ACC titles.

you really want to compare the talent rich area Miami is in to south bend, indiana?

Miami is one of those towns that has so much going on with the beach, the nightlife, pro sports and the girls. Recruiting there and coaching there are two totally different aspects. With all that Miami has to offer, it would always be the back burner of what was going on in the city. I agree that it is vital to change that program around though for the ACC. Esentially, that was a major reason for expansion within the conference.

No. Talent wise no comparison. Being a "major" powerhouse 20-30 years ago and now not even being a top 25 program. Yes very much so.

It isn't. I think someone may enjoy the challenge in returning Miami to it's former glory however. Seems to be a losing proposition.

just a question for you...would you rather win the ACC title, 3 straight years? OR win the SEC west just one?
Ultimately, I think the money would be close to the same....(ehh, maybe a lean to Miami)..but you can't put a monetary value on prestige.
Me personally? I'd stay with the MSU program and build from here...

1.3 mil as of now but his contract has incentives, and I know we are working on an extension that is supposed to more than double his salary.
Our AD has publically said salary shouldn't be a reason for us to lose our HC.

Eh. Charlie Weis proved that you can still recruit nationally at Notre Dame. Kelly's class wasn't terrible last year and I believe it was better than Miami's.
Now, I understand your point. Miami is the richest ground in the country, but IMO, they can't recruit nationally like ND can.

Miami is obviously in a more talent rich area than Notre Dame, and Miami get more players through admissions. But Prominentwon is right - ND can still recruit among the elite because they can recruit coast to coast. That's no easy task, but most coaches at ND have been able to recruit well. The only subpar recruiter there was Willingha. Weis, Davie, and Holtz were good recruiters.
Miami's facilities are pretty awful though, so I could see why Mullen may not have interest.

Sure its the SEC and the facilities are better at MSU but honestly he will stay a middle of the pack SEC team at MSU with perhaps a West title once in years. Thats about it. The Miami gig would give him a chance to win a ACC title and move his name up among coaches. Very short sighted on his part to stay at MSU.

Some say Mullen might be holding out for next year. Schools like Georgia, Florida, or LSU (if you are a negatiger) . Could be available if he holds out.
