His last two defensive coordinator jobs were in Chicago and for Georgia and overall a very mixed bag. Both got significantly better after he left.

he was not a great DC in the pros that's true, that doesn't bother me, lots of great college coaches did poorly in the pros (See Spurrier, Steve). its the experience that matters. at UGA they finished 35 in 16 (but that was his/Kirby's first year). The next 2 years they were 5th and 15th. The 2 after he left 1st and 17th, that looks pretty similar.

Colorado he was bad as HC

they were 5-7 (which they were the 2 years prior) not good obviously but not horrible. Its amazing to me how impatient we've become. We expect a coach to win NOW or we say he sucks? You know how many good coaches would have been DQ'ed Just as one simple example Mack Brown went 1-10 in each of his first 2 years at UNC in 88 and 89. His last 2 years (his first go round) 96 and 97 he was 10-2 and 10-1 and finished in the top 10 then had a great run at Texas. Now i get you wouldn't hire him after 2-20 but the point is given time he showed he can improve.

quote:

Aranda has improved defenses everywhere he’s been as a DC,

Wisconsin was a top 20 D the year before he was hired, he did get to #1 his last year year there, at LSU he did bounce around a little (2019 wasn't highly ranked but that is in part due to the offense and in part to injuries). I love Aranda as a DC, he did have more years as a DC in college than Tucker.

quote:

and so far as a HC looks at least equal to tucker at mich state

fair but 5-7 at a school that was 5-7, 5-7 the 2 prior years is not a debacle

maybe but he does get Michigan and PSU at home and did beat Mich last year.

Fun fact Nick Saban was 25-22-1 his first 4 years at Michigan State.

that's the 3 losses i'm alluding to.

i think he beats maryland and purdue, but purdue is a toss up really. their backup qb seems to be doing well.

i think the purdue game is the big game for mel if our admin has any desire to hire him. he has to win that game. of course he has to beat maryland too, but that's probable.

i agree. if he can go 10-2 by winning the two games he has a good chance to win and upset one of ohiost, pennst and mich he suddenly becomes a good candidate.

he just needs a good win because his hfc resume isn't very big. 9-3 with his only decent win being over purdue is meh.

i wouldn't want aranda if he hadn't beat iowast and byu this year. similar situations. dave still needs to make sure he beats texastech and kstate at the least.

i can't argue with any of that. Anything less than 9-3 would be a disappointment at this point but its not really exciting. if he does get to 10-2 or gasp 11-1 (can't see then winning in Columbus) that's a different story. Judging solely on record at this point though is silly, its simply not enough. He's a guy you hire on the cum, hoping for upside, like you would someone that't never been a HC.

And Nick Saban's record was 25-22-1 5 years at Michigan state prior to becoming LSU'S head coach.

pretty much. like hiring a good dc that can recruit and has shown promise he can turn things around, albeit a small sample size.

wouldn't be the worst hire for sure. i do admire him for not hanging around at bama or uga and coasting along.

certainly wouldn't be my first choice, but if you get to the 2nd/3rd tier i don't see how he'd be worse than Aranda/Napier types

it seems silly, but the next 6 weeks are gonna say a lot about tucker and aranda given their respective schedules.

I forgot that Tucker was at OSU.

I don't recall anyone singing his praises when he was at OSU, or caring when he left.

If Ohio State lost Hartline or Larry Johnson it would be a major blow.

When Tucker left nobody cared, and now he's going to be LSU HC?

Yeah, i cant see woodward going after mel tucker. His experience as a head coach is limited and his record is average. Sure, msu is 7-0 thus far, but they havent played anybody worth a shite. Their toughest opponent has been indiana ffs...congrats. I just dont see it.

Tucker is an Ohio guy and former Ohio State guy.

I want to see him do well.

I just don't know what he has accomplished to deserve LSU HC.

Sparty schedule is backloaded, they haven't played anyone decent yet.

Do you guys only want a coach that currently wins 11 games a year?

Might be tough sledding picking up that guy.

Or, would a guy that improves his team work?

I want a guy who I'm confident will be good enough to win it all at LSU.

Tucker is a ridiculous suggestion.
