Malzahn = Curley Hallman?

Convince me if we were to hire Malzahn it would not be the second coming of Curley Hallmann. Favre made Hallmann look better than he was, and I cannot help but think Cam Newton is doing the same for Malzahn. Too risky in my opinion. Thoughts?

common thought is:
Favre=Hallman
Newton=Malzahn
...but, I think Malzahn is VERY smart and has pioneered offenses. Hallman was an idiot with a great talent playing in a small pond.
I retracted my knee-jerk response b/c I actually thought about it.

What about all the other years of success Malzahn's offenses have had? Are those discounted?

I don't know how many fricking times this has to be posted:
AU had the #1 offense in the SEC last year with Chris Todd at QB.

Malzahn was a great OC long before Newton stepped foot on AU's campus.

Defense is still the most important in the SEC. Even though Auburn's offense was great, the tight games against Clemson, Alabama, & LSU were one in the end because they made defensive plays. If he keeps Chavis, then it'd be ok.

Hire him as OC.

I still have reservations about a guy that wanted to throw 40-50 times a game on a team that had McFadden and Felix Jones.....but that could just be me.

Malzahn is at least a proven good->great (but not elite) recruiter.

Stupidest comparison I've ever heard. Curly Hallman was nothing before Farve and was already a head coach at Southern Miss. Malzahn has won 2 SEC West Championships, 1 SEC Title, Broken school records at every college he has coached at and has never had an offense be ranked lower than 20th in America. Malzahn was a great coach and already an established offensive mastermind long before 2010 and Cam Newton came around. Curley Hallman got as far as he did because he was one of Bear's boy's.

I am NOT asking for him as HC. But, the OC opined that Gus = Curley because of ONE great qb.
THAT is what I am refuting.

Ok, I'm convinced it's a bad comparison. Sorry if it had already been discussed ad nauseum. New to the board. We will be fine regardless. Geaux Tigers!

exactly. being a good OC does NOT mean you will be a good HC

He never wanted to throw it that many times in 2006. That is the excuse and defense mechanism that Houston Nutt fans use as to why he didn't return in 2007. Remember that Malzahn created the Wild Cat package and was bringing Mitch Mustain along slowely. Mustain started 8 straight games and with his passing and the running game they won 8 straight games, but when Houston Nutt inserted Casey Dick into the starting lineup Arkansas didn't win another game.

Please tell me you didn't sign up just to post this stupid crap?!
Malzhan did well last year with Todd who is Jordan Jefferson-esque.
Look at what he did in his two years at Tulsa. That is really impressive. We can't help it if people who don't watch college football never heard of him until this year.
