ETA My whole point here is basically that as of today Gus Malzahn is not worth 3 million dollars as a head coach....period

I think most college football observers would say that Nick Saban is a proven, consistent winner at high level.
He went 7-6 in his 1st season taking over at Alabama.
Auburn went 8-5 in the 1st year with a new coach.
WIth a horrible hire as head coach and an unproven OC they won more games than a Saban-led team?
Look you don't like Malzahn as a head coaching candidate right now. That's fine. But if Vanderbilt, a private school with lots of money, wants to pay their next head coach, who they believe can generate excitement and bring a level of success they have never had before...why are you hatin' on a brotha!?
He spent the same amount of time at Tulsa as he has now at Auburn.
He was NOT the true offensive coordinator at Arkansas. That was Houston Dale Nutt and David Lee (Miami Dolphins) running that offense. Gus had a title. But Nutt and others on staff thought his hokey high school offense could not win games consistently at a high level. (ahem...sounds like someone in this thread).
If he was truly the offensive coordinator why did he leave to go to Tulsa?!? I think that would not be considered your normal move up the ladder. He wanted to prove that if you left him alone his offense would work.

So lets discount his time at Tulsa because I will tell you that I have no respect for the defenses he played against.....so we'll talk about the 2 years that he has of experience as a major collegiate offensive coordinator.
I agree 2009 was a great year for Malzahn his offense put up great numbers but they still lost 5 games (and put up a whopping 193 yards total offense against LSU interesting tidbit there). 2010 a great year again but with what a helluva lot of people are saying is the best collegiate player ever. 2011 is Gus's money year IMO.

I think Gus is a real good coach and will be a head coach one day. My point is what other schools are willing to pay $ 3 M now or next year, and that Nashville and Vandy could recruit nationally and compete like Stanford, TCU, and Northwestern with the right guy. Name other real $3 M short term options opportunities for Gus.
