I agree that not hearing about someone should be irrelevant.
What concerns me is he hasn't DC'd in a long time.
I'm not a fan of this, but if he's the hire I hope I am wrong. I didn't like the Pelini hire, was so-so on Steele, but I loved the Aranda hire.
I also don't know if I agree with comparing anything to Brady. I was actually incredibly excited about Brady based off of what I read about him. I also knew he had a respectable OC to work with and install his concepts with. He didn't have to be the sole guy. However, Jones apparently has DC experience at a smaller school about 5+ years ago? Sean Payton not wanting Brady to leave was a huge positive sign for LSU. I'm not sure how Minnesota feels about this.
I regret LSU isn't more attractive to currently established DCs.

Neither had Ryan Nielsen but most on this board thought it was a great hire

Ohio State's last 2 DC hires were NFL DB coaches
Who are these HR established DC hires we should be able to get?

He coached up the 2nd best defensive line in football.

Kerry Coombs had the 6th best passing defense with the Titans.
Jones passing defense rankings in 3 season:
32nd
21st
25th
I think people are justifiably angry.

Only hope i'm hanging out on, is that the Vikings Defense did go through a lil overhaul in the secondary, and while at cincy, the defense was just not that good as a whole, maybe they see some sorta brains with this guy, No clue but I hope it ends up proving me wrong

I hope he is successful. I wouldn’t mind him as a safeties coach.. I just don’t see anything on his resume makes him worthy of leading a defense that is one year removed from a national championship.

He will be the hire, which will lead to Raymond leaving and losing a few recruits. The decline has begun.

If hired, he may end up as a solid DC, but nothing in his resume suggest it. CEO doesn’t need a “home run” hire, just can’t be another Bo.
I’m SMH at the entire coaching search, given LSU knew they had to make a change at DC after Auburn. First major program in the DC search and this is the latest interview.

It's Kerry Coombs.
And blaming, or praising, a position coach for a team stat is misleading. There are so many things that go into passing defense beyond DB play. Pass rush? Schedule? Player quality? Scheme? LB play? Offensive pace?
As I've said, I'm not promoting Jones. I don't know a lot about him. But posting team stats to promote or detract from a position coach is a fool's game.

I don't know who he is, so I won't melt or anything, but agreed, as a Vikings DB coach, that is very unimpressive. Their defense has been garbage the past couple years, so idk.

What'd Raymond tell you about his thoughts?

Hey Bjorn..
I live in Iowa. Guess who is in my viewing area..
The Vikings
Every Sunday for 16 games, I watched the Vikings. My wife’s entire family is Vikings fans. That’s where I eat Sunday lunch after church. They have Danielle Hunter.. so I didn’t mind. Now the Jets, so I really didn’t mind.
Granted, the Vikings didn’t have much of a pass rush this season. And viewing the bipolar QB play of the head scratching Cousins is puzzling..
Do you want to know who the worst position on the team was all season? The Vikings DBs. While the pass rush looked anemic. The secondary looked lost. Sound familiar?
I listen to father in law, a Vikings die hard fan rail on the hire of Deronte Jones. He didn’t understand how this guy got the job in the first place. I didn’t pay much attention to it. What do I care about older Zimmer’s hires.
Then I heard younger Zimmer was interviewing.. I was pumped! Watching the Vikings play, you know position jumps out? Their linebacker play.
Come to find out the interview was with freaking Deronte Jones. My father in the law, the Vikings fan, will be pleased he is gone.

We're Saints fans and watch his defensive lines develop incredibly well and dominate on the field.
He also was a beast of a recruiter in his short stint at NC State.
Does Jones have an elite secondary that we have seen him develop over the years? Has Jones ever recruited at a P5 college and done so very well?
Posted on 1/25/21 at 9:05 am to CatfishJohn
Not to mention he turned a 3 star Bradley Chubb into a top 5 pick.

On paper this is a pretty bad hire if it happens.
But sometimes hires that look bad on paper work out. Sometimes guys are really smart and just given a bad hand, but the reason they keep getting jobs is because of how good of a coach they are despite results (without context).
We will see.

Also I'll add that Sean Payton liked Nielsen so much he blocked him from leaving then made him Assistant Head Coach.
Think they're going to do the same for Jones if we come for him?

There's several million people in that viewing area. Are they all experts?
In my cursory research into Jones, Zimmer said in the preseason that the DBs would be a weakness and then in several mid- and late-season articles, he was happy with the development and progress.
But that doesn't mean anything, good or bad.
None of us are interviewing him. None of us are having detailed conversations with him about scheme, etc. None of us are checking with his former coaches or players.
He could be great or horrible, as any coach would be. There are no sure things.
I'll choose to be optimistic.
