James Madison special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Grant Cain
Recent jobs: James Madison (2019-present), Mercer special teams coordinator/inside linebackers coach (2013-18)
Cain’s 2019 James Madison special teams unit ranked No. 1 nationally (both FBS and FCS) with nine blocked kicks and set a Colonial Athletic Association record with 27 made field goals by Ethan Ratke.
Led Mercer’s 2018 special teams operation to four top-12 rankings in the FCS — net punting (No. 1), kick-return average (No. 9), punt-return average (No. 12) and punt-return defense (No. 12).
Also coached an all-conference tight end during that 2018 season (Dylan Stapleton).
Was contacted about an FBS special teams coordinator job this past cycle but opted to stay at James Madison.

I’ll leave the exciting digging up to y’all on this one

Kelly acknowledged the problem last year, parted ways with Polian and then didn't hire a dedicated coach to fix it. He seems content with special teams being a non-factor.

Didn’t you the ST coach have to coach DL?

Lots of teams don’t have a dedicated ST coach.
Alabama doesn’t.

Well it’s not working for us.
Our special teams is dog shite outside of the fg unit.
We have had horrendous kick returns including a fumble last week.
Worse punt return decisions including a muff and multiple really bad moves
Our senior punter has a noodle for a leg
Our kick coverage is piss poor and we struggle to get the ball to the endzone.
It’s clear we need a real coach for a while

What position coach spot do you want to lose?

Preferably Diaco olb since our DC is reported to be a lb coach, cooks or steeples.
So if out next DC is a lb guy Diaco is an easy get rid of, if he is a secondary guy then both cooks and steeples can be gone. I’d say get Chevis Jackson as DB coach and Aranda as DC

I really think we’re paying tPiper for the endless stream of dangerous return guys we had for years
Faulk
Davis
Green
Peterson
Mathieu
Beckham
Chark
etc
Maybe Anderson will get it together next season

Really disappointed Kelly decided one muff should be the end for Anderson.
All spring and summer we get hype train, then first punt he isn’t in and then he muffs the one he is on.
I do get with our o that just having the ball works.
The rest of special teams has been arse

right now House is the ILB coach and Janek is the OLB coach.
also, Steeples coaches CB while....whats his name coaches the safeties.
there are 2 opportunities to "combine" or to reorganize the staff to allow for another coach. personally, i would have one guy coaching all of the DBs.

Many teams dont have a ST coach only as a on the field coach. Bama doesnt. ST coach is OLB coach. Georgia has an analyst as a ST coach in Cochrane, who was a strength and Conditioning guy before. Tennessee has an OLB coach do it. Texas has the TE coach do it. Oregon has a DB coach who does it. Oklahoma has a support staffer doing it.
LSU was originally going to be like most of these teams and have a Suport staffer be heavily involved with Diaco. But with Lindsay our Diaco moved to the OLB spot

Need to can the trash cb and safeties coaches. Hire a real db coach for both and a st coach
Posted on 11/14/23 at 8:09 pm to Big4SALTbro
We aren’t hiring a special teams only coach, unless that person is a recruiting ace.
Bob Diaco has coached special teams his entire career. He’ll likely be back as the ST analyst, which is what his job was before Jimmy Lindsey got sick and they had to shift he and Jancek around.
