In most cases, firing without a backup plan you're confident will provide a better situation is a mistake.

I agree, I don't see LSU getting a top tier coach. If Saban were to retire after this season you'd see coaches lined up with resumes in hand wanting an interview.

While we may view LSU as a top 5 program, I don't think the rest of the country feels the same way. I think the days of LSU being mentioned as a title contender are over for the time being.

I think that Herman is our best shot at getting relevant again, but since it looks like Strong is out at Texas I do not think we get Herman. Even if LSU were to get Herman, there is always the risk that Herman fizzles out and now we have a head coach that we over paid for while Texas and Oregon are glad they didn't get.

I feel that if Jimbo is hired we will be in the same position as we were with Miles. Above average team with random losses to inferior teams they should beat.

So who do you hire? I think the best thing to do is try to find a diamond in the rough, like LSU did with Saban. Unfortunately that's a crap shoot.

I think once it was evident that Miles had peaked it was the right move to not continue giving him all the resources in the world for mediocre results.

Miles was not willing or able to adapt and make another run. Whoever the next guy ends up being will have all the resources imaginable and will have a chance to be very successful. Hire the best guy with the best resume and give him all the resources to be successful and hope for the best.

Will it be a "name" coach? Maybe not. IMO there's only 4 of those guys and only one is a realistic possibility. You hope whoever you get has the intangibles to become that guy.

Well, to be fair, they mostly say that during LSU broadcasts. You probably would hear that said during Texas games too.

It took Harbaugh 2 years to shake the rust of Michigan.

True, timing is everything. If the powers that be fire Miles last year we have Herman in a hand basket, if we want him. Hind sight 20/20.

That's such a weak, pussy-arse mentality to have. No wonder we kept Miles for 2-3 seasons too long. Hell, some of y'all wanted to hire Ed O full time.

The mentality of our fan base and our admins should be; "We are LSU. We have been extremely successful in the toughest conference in CFB. We put more players in the league than anyone else, and we have no in-state competition."

Our mentality should be to go out and take what we want, from whoever we want, and frick their girlfriends in the process. Sick of this weak shite coming from our fan base.

Man, ya'll are setting the bar so low for Alleva. The LSU football program is a top 5 job in the nation. They need to be throwing their weight around and go get who they want, not timidly hanging back and waiting for the d-line coach to maybe "earn" it. Texas hasn't even fired their head coach yet and it has been known for weeks who they want and that they'll do whatever it takes to get him. Meanwhile, LSU, who has weeks of a head start to get this right is too afraid of getting in a "bidding war".

Face it, Alleva is in over his head. The Johnny Jones hire should have proven that. Mickey Mouse AD, Mickey Mouse fans.

I heard we contacted Holgorsen and Fedora. If we had Jinbo in the bag what would be the need to contact these guys?

Like I've always said whoever we get will be an upgrade on les miles. Also if we have to settle I'll be most happy cause could see aranda getting the head job which I want. Or maybe fleck. Just give me anybody other than fisher. I know doesn't look like we will get Herman but that's not really that big of a deal

i think reality is starting to sink in that even though we're a great program with the ability to pay a competitive salary we can't just snap our fingers and get whoever we want and it isn't a guaranteed upgrade over what we had.

The problem is that this is JUST NOW setting in for many fans. Sorry, but great coaches all across the nation haven't been just biding their time waiting for the LSU job to open. Plus, for LSU fans the list of HC's who wouldn't constitute a "settle" is basically two people.

Timing is more important than any other variable. The three "biggest" coaching hires in the last 10 or so years have all come down to great timing.

In 2006 Mike Shula had regressed after a good 2005 season. Nick Saban just happened to be considering coming back to college football. If Saban has just a bit more success with the Dolphins or Shula doesn't fall off again at Bama, that hire doesn't happen. Right place, right time.

In 2010 Jim Tressel had just gone 12-1 with a win in the Sugar Bowl. OSU had ZERO desire to make a change until the NCAA stepped in. It just so happened that same year an Ohio native and two time championship coach got burned out at Florida. Each took a year away from the limelight and in 2012 came together. The right guy was unexpectedly available at just the right time.

Jim Harbaugh was having incredible success in his first 3 years with the 49ers. Success that many NFL teams would kill for. Unfortunately for SF, Harbaugh and management couldn't get along, and the 49ers axed their successful HC at the same time that HC's alma mater was looking for a coach.

None of those 3 coaches left great situations to come to their current schools. Bama, OSU and Michigan just hit the lottery at the right time. If LSU could pull Fisher away from FSU, it really would be an incredible and rare feat. In this day and age, championship coaches at successful power conf. schools don't just jump from one school to another.

Yep, should have gone after Herman last year - that will turn out to be a huge blunder by the LSU admin.

My biggest concern with getting rid of him, particularly after last years debacle, is exactly this. I don't trust the guys who couldn't keep their cards close enough to the vest not to create a media firestorm.

I always liked Miles as a coach, even if I didn't always like his Xs and Os on gameday (I don't know if that makes sense. To use a nautical analogy Miles the captain of the ship was pretty good even if Miles the pilot would run aground more often than he should. And Miles the captain tried to pilot too often). But hindsight has made me feel like we needed "fresh blood" a little higher than the coordinator level, but I am still concerned about the people doing the hiring.
