Hearing the Lovie Smith era is over at #Illinois. Could be an announcement soon.

WTF is this statement? It is unlike any firing statement i have seen. Not one sentence thanked lovie for his service. also goes out of its way to randomly list his record. why is that relevant?

Prefect place for Gus Malzahn to land. They would be happy with 7-5 every year.

I don’t get how Illinois doesn’t do better recruiting Chicago

Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Purdue and obviously Northwestern are closer to Chicago than Champaign is. Champaign is in the middle of nowhere and no one in Chicago gives a shite.

I don't want to live in a world where simply stating facts without embellishments or unnecessary verbosity is considered "unprofessional and rude".

We're turning into a civilization of pussies.

It is unheard of to release a statement without thanking a coach for his service.

and you don't list records. you say "unfortunately results aren't there", or something like that.

this is pr 101.

they are gettig blasted on twitter.

The AD thanked Lovie. Not sure why everyone’s panties are in a knot.

quote:

”Lovie Smith led the Illinois football program with unquestioned integrity during his nearly five years of service," director of athletics Josh Whitman said in a statement. "I have tremendous respect for coach Smith and will always be grateful to him for providing a steady, experienced hand at a time when our program required stability. His unshakeable leadership, never more needed than during this pandemic, will be forever remembered. "Nonetheless, based on extensive evaluation of the program's current state and future outlook, I have concluded the program is not progressing at the rate we should expect at this advanced stage in coach Smith's tenure."

The only reason I can think of is because they want to show the reason he was fired in the statement to avoid the backlash of firing an African American coach

Lovie was a questionable hire to begin with. Not sure he should have been there in the first place. That Wisconsin win last year certainly bought him some time

How is that rude?

That's not a bad record at Illinois.
