pretty sure he was pre-Rooney Rule.

Would have been hired w/o Rooney Rule. He was cheap, and had garnered a great deal of popularity because of his post game, "all my players are a bunch of Mary's" speech.

But you can count him, if it helps.

Tomlin was hired because of Cowher, not because of his interview.

Or, if you are in need of a "BOOM", I submit:
quote:

Although Tomlin's ascension to an NFL head coaching job has been cited as evidence of the rule working as intended, Rooney himself disputes this, as he had already interviewed a minority candidate prior to interviewing Tomlin
LINK

Had Tomlin got the Miami Job, it would have been because of the Rooney Rule.

False. I have read on more than one occasion that he blew management away with his interview.

I really don't think so.

And there's no way to really know how much the Rooney rule has helped these guys. They've always said it's more about getting minority guys experience interviewing and getting their names out there. So even though they don't get the initial job they interview for, it may help them get another one down the road.

False
Tomlin was hired well before his interview. Rooney hired the man Cowher told them to hire, essentially.

However, he may have given a great interview. . .but that was just a formality.

At the start of the 2006 season, the overall percentage of African American coaches had jumped to 22%, up from 6% prior to the Rooney Rule.

I mean you haven't given a link to that yet. I get the whole Tomlin wasn't a rooney rule guy but I'm interested in learning more about the whole Cowher picked his successor thing

You are correct. Smith was hired the year following the Rooney Rule.

I remember it being reported before Tomlin was hired that Cowher recommended him.

I could be wrong, but again. . .if a minority was interviewed by Pittsburgh before Tomlin, how is it an example of the Rooney Rule?

Do you have a goal in mind for this thread, some type of statement?

Rather than play hide the ball why not just state your opinion on the subject?

Because Rooney, having the rule named after him, felt the need/pressure to not only follow the rule but go above and beyond it??

you act like because Rivera was able to catch a plane before Tomlin, or had his schedule cleared a few days earlier than Tomlin that they both didn't benefit from the rule.

I asked a question.

When people do that, the goal is typically to acquire answers to the question.

Why? How would that fit the thread topic.

I'm not sure they knew each other, and it'd seem to me that Cowher would sooner recommend Whis or Grimm or no one at all.

So you are saying that Tomlin was NOT a result of the Rooney Rule, but because the owner wanted to interview minority coaches?

Thank you for your support.
