It's not just the Rooney Rule by itself. There's been pressure put on the NFL to increase the number of black head coaches, including pressure by Jesse Jackson. Without the rule and without the pressure, there'd be fewer blacks as head coaches now than there are.

Lots of things are subjective.

What was the hiring and interview record for black coaches before it? Why did people feel the need for the Rooney Rule in the first place? Just to bitch?

What we do know is that the hiring of black coaches prior to the Rooney Rule wasn't all that good, depending on your vision of "good".

If prominent black leaders and black coaches felt it was good, there would not have been the need for the rule. If blacks had been getting interviewed sufficiently all along, there would not be the need for the rule.

Do you think there'd be more black head coaches without the pressure and the rule? What makes you think the folks doing the hiring would have changed without the rule and pressure?

I know as much as anyone else that all of the uproar and bitching we hear from time to time about there not enough black folk in so and so profession can be highly annoying.

I don't see any reason to believe that things would have changed without the rule and the pressure.
