Check out the comments to these articles from this past April and a couple weeks ago. Very similar to our criticisms of Crowton, if not worse. A few gems:
quote:

You have absolutely no clue as to how bad of a coach Steve Kragthorpe is. He's one of the multitude of non BCS coaches who were overvalued by BCS programs to taking a horrible program to a mediocre one. In 2007, after a horrific first year the program had their most draft picks in HISTORY.
quote:

I have seen NO improvement in our program in any phase of the game. We are slower, and frankly not as talented as our competition. Our offense has gone from top ten to near the bottom. Krags can sure talk the cliched coach talk but sure can't walk it. In my opinion, a good coach can take the talent he has and find a way to win. This coach can not.
quote:

I'm a UK fan and I have to say Kragthorpe is one of the most clueless coaches I've ever seen. Hope he stays for a long, long time. Ha!!!
quote:

"He said he has already received three job offers, including an offensive coordinator's position at a BCS conference school..."

What AD in a BCS conference has watched this guy's play calling and said, "Oh yeah, we need him as our OC."???
quote:

How can you have the players he had, handed to you on a silver platter and do NOTHING???????????
quote:

Krags last chance ..his Alamo...was taking over the offensive play calling duties ....when it turned out to be the teams worst offensive year in a long time...nowhere to hide then ...and no one to throw under the bus...it was the final deathblow ...and thank goodness for that ...some guys just don't fit...head coaches ...successful ones anyway ...need to be dynamic personalities (good or bad).....he is in over his head ...he should only be like a position coach somewhere ..and he'll have trouble even findin work there i'd say ....it will take 3-5 years now to get to a respectable talent level and reach a competitive level...amazing work by the guy really ...he is a demolition expert

Louisville Courier story about Kragthorpe firing: LINK

ETA my other posts on what I found:

1. Another to add - it's a Louisville Cards' blog, and the link is an "Open Letter to Steve Kragthorpe."

quote:

You are leaving because you couldn’t recruit, you couldn’t develop winning schemes, you were an incompetent offensive coordinator, you were a poor manager, and you sounded like the football equivalent of Miss South Carolina, presented with a problem that you tried to talk your way through with clichés and platitudes.

You are leaving because you didn’t use common sense on the field. You didn’t recruit well in your home state. You couldn’t show up for coaches association meetings on time. You couldn’t speak without sounding like a mealy mouthed cartoon character.

You are leaving because you didn’t have a plan, didn’t communicate a strategy, and were never clear in what was going wrong or how you were going to fix it.

2. Another find on Kragthorpe, again similar to Crowton:

quote:

Even more so than that, Kragthorpe never fully utilized the talent on his team. For example, in 2007, instead of using 6-foot-6 receiver Mario Urrutia as a vertical threat as Petrino had, Kragthorpe's offense often called plays for Urrutia to go over the middle or catch screen passes. An unhappy Urrutia wound up leaving after the season as a junior.

Kragthorpe had three different offensive coordinators and four different defensive playcallers during his tenure. His teams often looked disjointed on the field, repeatedly burning timeouts in confusion early in games or lining up in the wrong formations. Kragthorpe's calls on third and fourth downs prompted a lot of head-scratching.

Perhaps the most damning evidence against Kragthorpe is this: He took over offensive coordinator duties this year, and the team averaged 18.5 points per game, worst in the Big East and the fewest by a Louisville team since 1996. Though he came to town with the reputation as a bright offensive mind, his offenses lacked imagination and paled in comparison to his predecessor.

3. And another find - again, sounds familiar:

quote:

Well, throw one of those batteries back into the stands and I think you could hit someone to call a more imaginative offense. I haven't been a proponent of firing Krags during the season before; now I'm leaning that way. Send a message that the undiciplined mess of a game plan is unacceptable, that wasting timeouts when a game is coming down to the wire is moronic, that having a team with good field position look like they've never run a 2 minute drill is pathetic.

(Link also has photo of "Kragthorpe's playbook", which is a screenshot from the original Tecmo Bowl )

--

4. And more links: one is from the first practice for Louisville for this season. Kragthorpe took over OC duties for 2009, and at this first practice he was working almost exclusively with the offense and the QBs.
LINK LINK

Louisville's offense this year was 92nd in total offense, 90th in rushing offense, 72nd in passing offense, and 110th in scoring offense: LINK

We can do far better than this guy. We need to if we want to compete for SEC and national titles.

He was atrocious in every single way at Louisville. Took a team that had been ranked for six or seven years (including two top 6 finishes in the 3 years before he came) and ran it inot the ground. He blamed Petrino for everything, but he was an awful coach who could not recruit whatsoever. He took over after they won the Orange Bowl and had a few NFL players on his first team and ran that program into the ground. On top of all of that, he called their offense this year and it was fricking pathetic.

Needless to say, I am not in favor of LSU hiring him.

Here is a quote from the editorial as well:

quote:

This offense, Kragthorpe's offense, has delivered two touchdowns in its last three Big East games. Pre-Kragthorpe, Louisville averaged at least 28 points a game for nine consecutive bowl seasons. Three times the Cards averaged 40 or more.

In way over his head as a HC. Doesn't mean he can't be a good coordinator.

So if he's that terrible of a coach, can someone explain the turnaround he accomplished with Tulsa?

He took over the offensive playcalling this past season and was a disaster apparently.

He had to clean house at UL like Gundy did after Miles left OSU. When Gundy did that they struggled and had a losing record.

Talent level at UL dropped off big time. He had the best offense in UL history in 2007 (his first year there) with a lot of talent, but the trouble makers Petrino brought in got to be too much and he kicked em off the team and their talent level had a serious drop.

He's a great OC with talent and actually CAN develop QBs.

This is true. Keep in mind that I'm biased being from the Louisville area. People loved it when he was hired, but he was terrible. Maybe he'll be a good coordinator, just can't see how he'd be the top choice for a program that is way above Louisville.

Emmanuel, wasn't their offense great his first year but their defense horrible?

I think that's where he struggled. Then having a lot of bad apples on the team inherited from Petrino's recruiting.

Tulsa had much better years after he left. Check their 2007 and 2008 stats compared with 2005 and 2006. They averaged about 2000 more yards per season after he was gone.

Yeah, you are right about that. Good god was that defense bad. I can honestly say I have never seen anything like their D that year. Guys would run wide open down the field.

I hear the bad apples from Petrino thing a lot and I'm sure its true. But I've never heard a coach get such a pass on that shite like people try to give Kragthorpe. None of the problems were hurting Louisville when Petrino was there; kids were rarely getting into trouble. I'm sure it was a contributor, but Kragthorpe should shoulder the lion's share of the blame for his failure. Really, he did nothing well there. I can't emphasize that enough- horrible when he took over the offense, couldn't recruit, terrible coach, can't manage the clock, all around awful.

I agree Kragthorpe shoulder's a large shoulder of the blame. He just wasn't ready for the pressure of being a head coach at a place like UL when Petrino left.

It was a top 15 team at the time, but doesn't mean he can't be a good OC. I would rather someone else, but he's a better groomer of QBs than Crowton, that is for sure.

Kragthorpe walked into a program which had won 68 games in the last seven seasons, been to nine straight bowl games, finished sixth in the nation in 2004 and 2006, and was returning 17 starters and an All-American quarterback from a team that had just gone 12-1 and won the Orange Bowl.

Under his watch, the Cardinals have won 11 games and lost 13, failed to make a postseason appearance, compiled a record of 4-10 in the Big East, and gone a combined 0-6 against the once-dominated trio of Kentucky, Connecticut and Syracuse.

When Louisville fails to win five games in 2009 — which it will — it will be the first time the program's wins total has declined for three consecutive seasons since the 1973-1975 stretch.

Had to post one more bit of info myself. And I agree with everything you said, LSUMafia. I just shudder to think about him coming here after watching him at Louisville the past few years.

Kragthorpe has not recruited for shite since he has been at Louisville and watching their offense is like watching grass grow. No thank you. Really, no thank you. Get someone better.

Just one final thing in support of your point. The first time Louisville won a BCS game was the Fiesta Bowl in 91 (killed Bama) under Howard Schnellenberger. He was immediatelly preceded by a young coach that ran the program into the ground for three years before John L. Smith put it back on the upswing. People in Louisville started referring to Kragthorpe as 'Cooperthorpe' in reference to the previous coach. That coach: LSU DBacks coach Ron Cooper, who has certainly shown that he can be a very good position coach after struggling as a head coach.

If any of you saw Petrino Louisville offenses compared to Kragthorpe offenses you would be scared of him as our O-coordinator. He basically took a NFL caliber Qb (as projected by all scouts) Hunter Cantwell and turned him into an undrafted Qb. He turned Tulsa into a average program but they've been much better since he's left. He walked into a good situation @ Louisville and turned sugar into $h*t (they were preseason #11 when he arrived in 2007 and they haven't seen the rankings since). I hope they find someone else.
