I’m guessing he wants to be more involved with recruiting as he was heavily involved With personell decisions hence the title being created for him. Idk for sure but UT isn’t smart if that’s the case cuz the dude could recruit as good as some position coaches.

Austin seems like a baby who gets home sick after he moves. He left for USC and came back very soon after. It was weird that this had been in the works for a long time without the football coach in place (or even the current AD). Why did he "know" any coach hired would want him having a hand in his program?

From what I'm hearing, we assumed he was gonna have the same role that he did at LSU, apparently he wanted a role that was closer to assistant AD. Pruitt didn't want him on staff to be his boss. And I completely understand where Pruitt is coming from here.

That doesn't make much sense. Even if Thomas has Assistant AD in his job title and reports directly to the AD, Pruitt also reports directly to the AD. So, Thomas would not be Pruitt's boss.

Agreed, that bridge was burnt when Thomas left LSU for the second time and it not working out at both USC and now apparently Tenn. He won't get a return to LSU this time around.

Nashville radio site is saying that Thomas wanted more control than what he had at LSU. Can't blame Pruitt or Fulmer for not agreeing to this

quote:

Feldman is dead on. The breakdown between Thomas and the Tennessee athletic department was do to a misunderstanding of what Thomas’ role would be in the program.

It came down to one word: “autonomy”.

A to Z Sports has learned that Tennessee wanted Thomas to have a typical Director of Player Personnel role. It seems Thomas wanted to run the football program much like an NFL GM, getting autonomy in areas that Phil Fulmer and Jeremy Pruitt weren’t comfortable with giving up. Those areas could include staff hires and staff management, along with all player personnel responsibilities.

Giving autonomy to Thomas would be unprecedented in college football. Thomas was only one of two “GMs” in college football while at LSU and he didn’t have complete autonomy at LSU, either.

Yeah, you can't hand over that kind of power to a 31 year old with no comparable experience. He would essentially hold the entire football staff's and Fulmer's job in his hands.

He may be a boy genius, but that's too big of a risk.

He'll be a successful GM in the NFL or some college team may roll the dice and give him what he wants, but I doubt seriously it'll be a program like Tennessee or LSU.

The fact it ever got this far is still ridiculous. There seems to be a pattern of horrible communication at Tennessee.

They hired Phil Fulmer as their AD, let that shite sink in for a minute. He hasn't been at Tenn since 2008 when they fired him as head coach. Now they bring him in as AD?

Thomas should make some inquires into NFL jobs since that seems to be what he wants ultimately.

Not sure why you are blaming Phil here. The rumors about Thomas coming to Tennessee started weeks before he became AD and apparently Pruitt didn't want Thomas to have this amount of power either.

But yeah not sure how Thomas didn't have this all lined up before he left LSU. Weird situation

Totally weird. Once the AD change happened, I thought the Thomas deal was dead too. I assumed that Thomas was part of the Currie/Haslam plan. Maybe Fulmer made concessions to honor the previously established deal with Thomas, but didn't want to agree to the power that Thomas had previously negotiated.

Word in Louisiana is that Thomas burned a bridge here when he left, so he's probably not coming back to LSU. Wonder if he ends up in Cleveland.

would be a weird move. He won't get the control that was the issue at Tenn. They have other guys doing parts of the job he wants. Unless petito is leaving

Bama already has someone in Austin's role.

In fact, they probably have 3-4 guys on staff that does what he does.

The only reason he would go to Bama is to have it on the resume, but Saban isn't giving him that kind of stroke either.
