Tennessee’s just hired Kevin Steele, the recent Auburn interim head coach and renowned defensive coordinator, is expected to be back in the job market – but wealthier in the process. Already pocketing checks from Auburn, Steele is set to make some $900,000 for his work on Rocky Top after a two-year guaranteed contract is evaporating into scarcely two weeks.

Whatever Board of Regents/Supervisors/Governors Tennessee has that approved that contract should be removed from their position immediately.

UT is writing the book on what not to do with coaching contracts.

I totally get not wanting to force a coordinator on an incoming HC. And I get the HC not liking it. But Huepel’s already got the juice to say no to Steele not only being DC, but bumped down to LB coach?
Or is Tennessee just that desperate that they’ve lost all leverage whatsoever? I haven’t kept up, what happened with Row the Boat? I thought Fleck was a done deal.
By the way, even though Steele’s original plan for a coup on the Plains didn’t land him that job, dude has seriously pocketed some nice dough relative to the amount of work he’s done, and may be the big winner of this off-season.

He would be a pretty good resource for Heupel as a def coord
You need someone that knows the landscape of this conference
He has no idea what he's getting into from a recruiting standpoint

Yeah honestly would be a very solid hire for him at DC. Good recruiter, knows their biggest rival well, consistently pretty good coordinator.
Not sure what Heupel is thinking.

Probably doesn’t want a coach whose fresh off a coup attempt of his last boss on staff

It would have been awesome to get Steele in here coaching LBs for a year to help our green DC get his feet on the ground.

O probably doesn’t want Steele around for the same reason Huepel doesn’t want him around and for the same reason Miles shouldn’t have wanted O around

Makes Coach O look like a genius.

You'd think Heupel should be able to easily survive that since he's basically coming with the AD, who wasn't the one who hired Steele.

Boosters have more power than ADs do

Coaches, AD's, and politicians seem to always fail upward.

Yes. As far as State residency goes, I'm not sure if there are requirements.

To be fair Steele hasn’t really “failed” a whole lot since that orange bowl against wear Virginia back in 2011
