If he was worth it, someone would have him on staff.

wouldn’t be worried about him coaching, seems passionate about it.

with as much as he’s got in the bank, is he really going to want to hit the recruiting trail hard?

This is exactly what I say whenever Mawae’s or Ryan Clark’s names get mentioned. They may think they want to coach, but are they really gonna wanna get up at the arse crack of dawn and drive out in the middle of bumfrick Florida on a Tuesday the week before Christmas to kiss the arse of some snot-nosed 17-year-old and his family? I can’t imagine a whole lot of multi-millionaires who aren’t head coaches are all that fired up about doing that.

I really liked Grimes. He is a genuinely good guy. He is a hell of a coach.

Mawae wont be the OL coach.

Kevin is a different breed of multimillionaire. His core values are fricking impressive. He’d love to wake up and recruit. Guy has always been intense and persistent as hell.

I do like the Cregg hire, but no need to be snarky about Kevin (not pointing at you....this is for others).

Cregg bio snippet:

quote:

Cregg is currently the OL coach at Louisiana State University. Previously he was the assistant offensive line coach for the Los Angeles Chargers. He served at the same position at the University of Tennessee and University of Southern California. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach with the National Football League Oakland Raiders. Prior to that he was an assistant coach at the University of Idaho and Colgate University.

THIS is what Mawae will need to do if he really wants to be in coaching.

I love Kevin. But, his first job shouldn't be at LSU. He needs to learn his COACHING craft just like any other. Get involved in the coaching fraternity, attend the coaching seminars, learn to recruit, etc.

Even superstar baseball players start out in the minor leagues and prove they can hit the curve.

Mawae will be terrific (I believe) IF he wants to be.

There it is. And seeing that money isn't really a concern for him I'd think he could consult the rules and maybe serve in an assistant/volunteer/consultant role at any college anywhere, preferably in Louisiana.

It has to be tough- he's probably HOF player who is financially secure and it seems he's being told he needs to start at the bottom and work his way up. And if I'm in his shoes the cost/benefit ratio of that is not appealing.

Mawae not in town anymore, he is out in Arizona with daughter who is going to be a swimmer for ASU.

All Mawae has done is NFL internships.
He does want to coach and someone will give him his break and he will be a good one down the line.

I can't disagree.

Thing is, I don't think he'll go the yeoman's route because that would pull him away from BR to a place he may not be emotionally invested in. At the end of the day, he's 47 y/o and beginning a coaching career at that age is tough (esp. when you're financially secure to his level).

There was a time Kirkland was going to be a swimmer....I honestly haven't kept up to that level.

That or the River Dance thingy.

O and Cregg would be wise to at minimum hire him to be an OL Assistant at LSU.

With all those years of NFL/All-Pro experience, there has to be some knowledge that he can offer to get that OL up to SEC West/SEC Championship standards. He'd be an asset if he could blend in and work with Cregg.

All goes back to recruiting though.

OL talent is not even close across the board.

Going from "Bad" to "Mediocre" is certainly "Improvement", but that's not enough in the SEC West. Have to step it up significantly in the talent level.

Got to get some guys in here that played in a Passing Offense in high school and are already somewhat proficient in pass blocking. (Will not be such a high learning curve then)

Aint gonna find em in Luzianner..............

Meh - counting our really inconsistent pass blocking, I think we're better than mediocre now - and that's performance - I guess we'll really start to see how the OL will look for 2018 in the bowl game. However, talent level is fine - the young players all looked great when you factor in their age. We just need to continue to add depth, watch attrition and never let it get this bad again (depth-wise). The JUCO is a stop gap, but if you're going to go JUCO, I think OL is one of those places to take a guy every other year or so as needed - especially one as good at Traore.

Maybe he should do a high school gig or try a small college just to get some experience instead of assuming he can just start out at LSU.
