We should bring in Josh Reed to coach WRs and Ryan Clark to coach Safeties while we’re hiring former players. They must be great coaches by virtue of being great players.
One of these is not like the others. Mawae is a HOF, former President of the NFLPA, has a desire to coach, and oh yeah.... LOVES LSU. There are more pros to hiring him than cons.

Have you seen what the analysts do during games? It's not any different than other coaches.
They aren’t allowed to recruit. We need a 100% PROVEN guy as both a developer and recruiter this time.

I understand people drawing the linear conclusion of former greats and translating to coaching, but Kevin is far different. There's a reason the players trusted him to represent them in the league. That reason is why parents/players will trust him to develop and look after them (recruiting).
Then hire him as an analyst and see if he can prove that he’s qualified to be an on-field coach. Short of that, he need to prove it somewhere else. He just hasn’t done that yet. Those of us who are skeptical aren’t knocking him. It just doesn’t make sense to hire an unproven guy when we don’t have to.

Mawae always campaigns for this job when it’s open but he never chooses to go somewhere to work his way up the coaching ranks to make it happen.
Also the only way to know if someone can recruit is to see them actually recruit. Save me all the talk about how good they were in the league or how smart or intelligent they are. You can be all those things and still never be a great recruiter. It’s a very specific skill that takes time to develop.

We need a home run if we replace Cregg
Why would Cregg be replaced? His OL won the Joe Moore award only last year.

He hasn’t delivered at all on the recruiting trail and our Oline was not the best in football last year. Burrow masked a lot of deficiencies up front.
I’d never even heard of that award until last season, so I have no interest in making decisions based on that award for our program

Both recruiting and player development have been uneven. We had three really good players on the line last year in Lews, Cush and Charles, but Hines and Deculus haven’t improved at all and Bradford and Thomas can barely get on the field. Are they all busts or can Cregg not develop all types of players?
Whether the problem is evaluation or development, there is a problem with our O Line.

he was widely known as the most crafty, technician in the NFL......Kevin's entire career has been based on hard arse work. He had NOTHING given to him.
One thing he has is passion and tenacity. God gave him that. It is those qualities that make many coaches great.

Kevin is special at far more than being an excellent pulling center.......
I would up vote this a million times if I could. I understand some peoples hesitation with hiring him and giving him his first on field coaching job, but for all the reasons you just mentioned I believe he would be very successful at LSU.

He was top 50 in the SEC, good enough for 4th amongst OL coaches. Does seem like he has struggled at pulling in the big fish.

Whether they were or were not, we can agree they were up there.

If it was me, I’d want to see how he does next year. He replaced a lot this year, and his starting LT was out for several games this year.

They were middle of the pack. So I don’t think we can agree there

Why haven’t we hired Joe Burrow as head coach yet?? He was our best player so that means he would be the best coach.
LOL
Maybe in the future, when he retires from playing the game.
He certainly has the work ethic and the smarts to pull it off if he wanted to.

There is no reason not to have him on the staff
1. He has no track record for success
2. He has never recruited
There’s 2 quick reasons for you.

I have a desire to sit on my arse all day and get paid millions for it. Desire does not translate into results. Just ask Rudy

quote:Well, the fact that he’s a shite recruiter for starters. I’m not going to take away all of his glory, but last year, Joe Brady’s system, along with Joey B being able to Houdini in and out of the pocket , CEH being the perfect back for that system, probably masked a lot of the Oline’s weaknesses last year.
Why would Cregg be replaced? His OL won the Joe Moore award only last year.
This year, absolutely ZERO running game and defensive players being up our quarterbacks asses in under 3 seconds most of the time, good enough?

Is his daughter still at ASU? If so, non starter.

Mawae is a no brainer homerun hire.
He is better than what we have had.

Something missing here, can't put my finger on it.
Oh yeah. Never been an OL coach. Which is the job you want him for.

What about Rob Sale, former player, freshman all-American, played guard and center. Coached in the NFL, and at college level, now offensive coordinator at UL Ragin Cajuns.
Or Ben Wilkinson, former all-American center, Remington Award winner, coached in college and current OL coach for NY Giants.

Better at what, exactly?
He only has a job now because his old NFL buddy Herm Edwards gave him one.
